Picked up an M-Audio Axiom 25 from Craigslist this weekend to fool around with MIDI a bit better than I have been able/trying to with my PC keyboard recently.

This is kind of wacky but I'm just trying out some instruments and drums to check it out with some old fashioned guitar an bass tracks thrown in as well. Cheers, hope everyone is having a great weekend out there.

Coincidentally, I was given a Novation Xio recently, great fun doing huge 1970s style synthy basslines and fiddling with the filter cutoff to make squelchy sounds. Problem is it isn't multitimbral so it only does one sound at once which makes recording it into Cubase a bit tricky.

Great , Klowenst - keep on :D (I've got the same model , only it's the 49 key version )

Frank , I haven't tried that Xio (nor cubase, for years..) I suppose Cubase records the midi-data ;
You should be able to record the actual sound (audio-wave) - then it should be easy to assign each sound to it's own track

Cubase records the MIDI and audio as well. I've used Cubase since it came on to floppy disks for the Atari 520, I pretty much know it backwards now, some people seem to hate it but it gets the job done for me.

Ahaha :D Still got my ST 1040 somewhere in my basement . I think I used a prog called SMPTE-track.....

Well- then I don't understand why you find recording so fiddly, though I understand it would have been more convenient if it was multitimbral.

PS- I guess Cubase is great , though I had my problems with it , years ago. A good friend use it in a fantastic way.

The fiddly part is when I want to use two or three sounds from the monotimbral synth. The only way to do it is to record the audio, change patch, record the audio, change patch, record again. That's fine but if I'm composing then I tend to write a chord change halfway through and it means all the parts have to be recorded again to put in the chord change. If the Xio as multitimbral then it wouldn't be an issue but hey, it's a cheap synth and I got it for free so I'm not really complaining!

Cool - I've been using an Akai MPK-49 for MIDI stuff
and it's amazing what you can do with them. Good luck!

Thanks for checkin out the track guys, I'm having a blast learning how to use this thing with Ableton Live. It should also come in handy for the music production course that Mike posted about. :D

I have an M-Audio 49-key with USB midi, but have found it near unusable with Ableton Live. The latency is so high it's a real pain. My Roland and Casio synths with real MIDI work great, so I'm not sure whether it's the USB midi in general that is to blame, or the M-Audio implementation.

Latency problems mean you probably have the wrong audio driver selected. Go in the preferences and make sure the input and output are using the ASIO driver. If it's set to something like Windows Sound System then it won't work fast enough to render the sounds in anything near real time.

That's often a reason for latency, but not here. Note that it's only a factor when using this keyboard, not any of my other two. Even if switching Ableton from Asio to "no audio", thus taking the audio latency out of the question, it's too painfully lagging.

Google how to 'optomize your computer for recording".

Good luck!

Mine is also connected using USB but I have not had any latency issues so far.

After some googling, it appears that some people have problems when using 64-bit Windows 7 or Vista - lag with Windows 7 x64 and not being able to use 32-bit drivers at all with Vista x64.
Well, I'm not going to Windows 8 - that's just not an option. :D
I guess I'll just wait for native 64-bit drivers, and use a different keyboard in the mean time.

I am using the 32bit OS so that explains why I am not seeing the same lag that you are.
