You that mentioned it are correct, that's how capitalism works. That is until the companies get too big and successful, then the Chinese communists buy them. Look what happened to Jim Beam this week. Do you ever wonder if they're not better playing our game than we are?

Is the mom and pop store you are referring to a Fender Authorized Dealer? Any independent store can buy Fender products wholesale from another dealer and sell them. But, there is no Fender warrantee unless they are an Authorized Dealer. I think the minimum buy in requirement is to be an Authorized Dealer. Or, it's possible some mom and pops that have been around a long time are grandfathered in by their original agreement, and as some of them close up, we are seeing the thinning of the herd.

Yes, it is an authorized dealer. I'm not sure how long it's been around, but I think quite a while.

I would guess that fender and gibson does it to protect the big stores since they have so much invested. Kinda forces people to buy guitars from then to keep there inventory moving. I could be wrong but that the feeling I get. Most of them mom and pop stores around me have a good selection of used guitars but the usually want darn near new prices for them. It's a tough business to be in these days.

Even the big brick and mortar stores are hurting as the inter web sales grow. Very little you can not buy on the net and the sellers overhead is so much lower!

I am sorry to see the "Mom & Pop" stores go but it is all part of the cycle. Things have been this way for a long, long time. At one time the biggest department store in the country was Woolworths and they had the tallest building in New York City. In the late 1970's it was Sears, I remember when they started moving into banking, "experts" were saying that they will end up owning everything, and they had the tallest building in the world. Now the big kid on the block is Walmart. The thing is, when a company gets to be that size they become bogged down by their own size and someone smaller and more agile comes in out of the blue and takes them down. Its all part of the cycle and it works well, as long as someone who thinks they are smarter than everyone else doesn't come along and try to "fix" it.

Works well? Just because something repeats itself doesn't imply that it's a good thing. There are way too many casualties - humans and smaller fry businesses. That one school bully will in all likelihood be replaced by another does not make school bullies good, acceptable or something we should put up with.

As for your '"experts" were saying', that's a straw man argument. Whether anyone made erroneous predictions is irrelevant - what has happened is relevant. I have not seen anyone defending those that say the sky is falling, but speaking for myself, I see them as less of a problem than those who race with blinders.

I would love to know why Fender has change their buying requirements for stores to carry Fender guitars. The new requirements tend to put small town brick and motor stores at a disadvantage due to the amount of money they have to put out to carry Fender.
Before the internet, these types of stores are where most people went to purchase their instruments because of the service after the sale. Any more though, unless you live in a large metropolitan area you do not find new Fender guitars or amps.

It's been this way for as long as I can remember, long before the internet. Most of the smaller stores did not sell Fender and Gibson. I only knew of a few that did. I am sure that those stores just made the business decision up front to invest whatever it took to meet Fender and Gibson's requirements.

Agreed.

From the manufacturer's point of view.... if they want to guarantee a certain level of quality customer service when their products are sold, would that be easier to do if they stick to major retailers like GC and Sam Ash?

My local Mom & Pop always has the newest of Fender models and some really exquisite FSR models from time to time. This may have something to do with the owner being a really close personal friend of the Fender Rep for Eastern Canada-that's how I ended up with a Jimmie Vaughn Strat that was actually played by Jimmie himself.I have been dealing with my local M & P for over 20 years even though my own nephew works in the national chain store that's just 2 miles away and it's strictly because the quality of the products they get in-especially Fender-and the superior service and warranty work-which I have yet to have to avail of.

The mom & pop music store in my town caters to a low-end clientele so they carry Squiers and other cheaper stuff ...

I agree with this, but I think a better way to say this is the "student musician" ... people (mostly kids) just starting out along with the school band musicians. Including a place to get lessons ...
