Our bass player brought his late 1959 P-Bass to practice and I thought I'd get a picture for you Forumites. It has one of the first Rosewood necks on a P-Bass. Slab board, fired clay dots. She's sweet. And yes, crazy man that he is, he gigs with her on the regular.

PS Those are just the amps in the practice studio we rent out. Not our gear... 8)

Tasty!

My brother has a '66 in 3TSB.

The early/mid '60s P-Basses can't be beat for raw Fender tone.

WOW! Gigs with a $10K bass. I'd be too afraid.

I agree. But instruments were made to be played, right?

Great thread. Why not gig with a great bass?

Well, if you saw how wild some of our gigs get, you'd definitely have second thoughts. But at the same time, what good does it do sitting in its case or only being played at home?

I wouldn't take it to a gig . I'd have an exact copy made and I'd take that one to the gig. Maybe he did that and didn't tell anyone. Yeah I bet he did,

Could be but he doesn't bring it out that much anymore. We all pitched in and got him an MIM Antigua P-Bass for his 50th and lately he's been mostly using that for gigs.

The '59 looks great - is it all original?

As much as I can tell. It even has a strap button on the headstock. Not sure about the pickups/electronics though. I'll check on that and report back....

The frets must be kind of worn if original?

Here's the scoop: bridge and pickguard are not original. It's been refinished and refretted. Neck plate is from the late 60s. Everything else is original. So it's not exactly a collector's item but it's certainly a player...
