Clapton, Santana, Springstein, John Fogarty, Chick Corea, Johnny Winter, Robert Plant, Little Freddie King, Sonny Landreth, John Hiatt, Boz Scaggs, Dr. John, Irma Thomas, Charlie Wilson, Chaka Khan, Walter 'Wolfman' Washington, Delbert McClinton, Robin Thicke, Tab Benoit, Anders Osborne, Lyle Lovette and on and on and on...

The 45th Anniversary 2014 New Orleans JazzFest Lineup !!!

90 days from today, Mrs. LMN and I leave for our annual 17-day excursion to the Crescent City to attend our 21st JazzFest.

We go down a week ahead of the Fest so we can enjoy the city before the Tourist Swell. Due to the PGA schedule (specifically The Players Tournament) we can only ever stay through the 1st weekend.

This year, the Music Gods are smiling on us because everyone we want to see is appearing the 1st wknd. !!

We stay at a friend's 200 y.o. Creole Cottage as he winters in Paris every year and doesn't return to NOLA until the 2nd week in May. Just one block outside the French Quarter and 2 blocks in either direction to the clubs on Frenchmen Street and St. Claude Ave., it's a perfect location (and the perfect price!).

It's always really tough counting down the days until we leave once the Lineup is announced !!

If you've never been to JazzFest, add it to your Bucket List... and... eat your Wheaties... we go about 20 hrs./day to see all the acts, eat decadent food and enjoy all the sights and sounds !

cheers!

True Dat... !!

It's a Modern equivalent of Sodom and Gomorrah if you want it to be,

A little Anti-Bellum if you wish,

All with a bit of Paris thrown-in for good measure.

Anyone familiar with it knows there's simply is NO other place on Earth like New Orleans.

cheers!

Sorry... not possible !

We marathon it every year...

If we're not in a club seeing Music, we're on our way to or from a club, or eating or sleeping (and little of that)... And that doesn't even count the 3 days of the Fest at the Fairgrounds (11am-7pm). We literally see 40-60 shows every year in a little more than 2 weeks !

No time alotted for the Internet... I don't even check emails except maybe twice the whole time we're there.

There is no Closing Time in NOLA so clubs stay open 18, 20 or 24 Hrs. w/ music acts every couple hours.

So, we might catch a 4pm show, go over there for a 6pm show, have dinner then catch the 8, 9 or 10pm show uptown, Midnite show mid-town, 2am show in the Quarter, 4am show on Frenchmen St., sometimes even a 6am show somewhere.

Usually will end the nite w/ a nitecap at the Buffa Lounge (1.5 blks. from the house). The Buffa is famous for having Happy Hour from 4 'til 6... TWICE a DAY !! I admit to having hit them both the same day on a couple occasions

Mrs. LMN will often quit around 1am because it's a working vacation for her. She sets up her 'office' in the kitchen (who cooks on vacation?) and gets up and works 2-4 hrs. everyday. I'll bring her home and then head on back out, sometimes 'til dawn.

She gets her stuff done about the time I'm waking up and we start again, we have it all down to a routine.

I know it sounds extravagant to some, but really, it's not... we get the cottage for free (a friend's) and Mrs. LMN travels so much that we fly for free (can't use up all her miles actually).

She's also away 220-240 days/yr., so we save a lot on everything throughout the year (think about it) which allows us to go whole hog when we get to NOLA, and also to catch-up with each other.

Most of the clubs don't have a cover (or $5, $10 if there is), so we're only paying for drinks and food.

I used to live there, and we visit every year, so we know the city like natives. We rarely go to any of the Rock Star Chef restaurants... as if John Besh is really cooking your meal. Instead, we've found all the local places that tourists usually don't know about, but often have the best food and also less $$.

Still... I could get a new guitar (and then some) with what we spend there every year

But, I have enough guitars (for now)... and you truly can't take it with you, so...

cheers!

Robin Thicke? Jazz Fest? Seems like he doesn't belong in that line up.

In one sense, the name JazzFest is a misnomer as it's really a Music Fest with Rock, Blues, Folk, Gospel, Country, Zydeco and yes, Jazz acts and stages.

OTOH, New Orleans is the Birthplace of Jazz and one of it's nicknames is Jazz City. So many, many things in NOLA are called Jazz. For example, the prepaid Passes for Public Transportation (RTC) are called 'Jazzy Passes', the NBA Utah Jazz franchise was originally the New Orleans Jazz (the team kept the name when the franchise was moved to Salt Lake), and so on.

In 2012, the United Nations declared the first annual International Jazz Day to celebrate Jazz around the World. The day began with a sunrise concert in Congo Square in Louis Armstrong Park in New Orleans, mc'd by the UN Attorney Gen'l. - the actual spot Jazz was first created, Congo Square in the past was a gathering place/market used by Creoles and African Slaves who were given a half day off on Sunday to worship and shop.

These people started combining traditional African music with the Gospel music they acquired here and sang and played at these weekly gatherings... and that was the genesis of Jazz.

Mrs. LMN and I were there in 2012 at 7am to see performances by Winton Marsalles, Diane Reeves and Dr. Michael White and Orchestra. Performances continued around the World (by Time Zone) until a final Sunset concert was performed in Sydney Australia. These were simulcast around the World.

It was kinda cool being there at the first one on that very spot ! 8)

cheers!
