This is amazing - '59 Chevy Bel Air vs. '09 Chevy Malibu, which do you think did better in a crash test?

No doubt the '59 car, but the '09 passenger would fare much better.

Edit:
I answered before seeing the video. Looks like the newer car did much better than I expected. :o Although I was certain that the passenger in the newer car was safer.

A few years ago a kid in an older Camero rear ended me. It did a lot of damage to my BMW and not that much to the Camero. The kids father was later dissing my BMW for crumpling and taking the worst of it. It didn't occur to him that I walked away and his kid was knocked silly.

Several of the Camaro and Firebird models from the 70s had the very dangerous fashion of splitting in half right behind the front seats when involved in some types of collisions. There were 3 or 4 fatal accidents involving these vehicles in our little corner of the world alone. In all of these accidents the back seat passengers sustained the worse injuries or fatalities. Most of today's cars have "crumple zones" built into them and the purpose of these zones is to absorb most of the forces generated by the initial impact of a collision so that the passengers won't be subjected to excessive G-forces etc.

Car makers Volvo,Mercedes and BMW were among the first auto makers to engineer these features into their designs,I vividly remember an ad campaign that BMW promoted in the 70s.The ad,which appeared in most automotive magazines, showed a shiny new BMW Bavaria with the rear end shoved in about 3 feet but absolutely no damage to the passenger compartment. The story line that accompanied the picture stated that the driver was taking the Bavaria for a test drive when a drunk driver rear ended him at a stoplight doing an estimated 60MPH,the ad went on to say that both the test driver and the salesman walked away with no injuries whatsoever because not only did the crumple zone do its intended job but the head restraints prevented them from getting whiplash. The ad ended up saying that upon returning to the dealership, the test driver bought a new BMW Bavaria immediately.

Thanks for posting. Those old chevys were the coolest, steel dashboards and all. The good old days. :D

+1

As much as I love the old iron, a modern automobile is much more crash-survivable.

A friend of mine had a crash with an old 60's Mustang. Wrapped it around a tree. The car split in half. It was cut from the front seats forward. Him and his rider survived by not wearing seat belts, and were both thrown to the ground on impact. They were both hurt and recovered, but still alive. The junk yard put both pieces of the car in front of their yard for passer-bys to see. Unbeleivable.

Is there a youtube link to"What would survive a drop from a third story window better:Vintage 1955 Stratocaster or 2007 Stagg Strat Copy?"
