I find very hard to believe that Jimi used a LP or other guitar besides his trusty Strat, but who knows for sure. Red House is one of the best blues/rock tunes of all time.

For Jimi, and most others of the era, a guitar was merely a tool, not the Signature Bling fans have since made them out to be.

Often they used whatever was at hand or gave them the sound they were looking for.

Jimi did Newport Jazz with a Telecaster w/ Strat neck, something few but his most ardent fans realize.

Dylan wasn't trying to be revolutionary, or contrary at Newport in '65 when he appeared with his Strat, despite boos and jeers from the crowd. He just realized that an accoustic was just fine in front of 40 people in some dank coffeehouse, but not so great for 100,000 people at an outdoor venue.

Clapton, Townshend also played LPs and Jimmy Paige recorded 'Stairway...' on a Telecaster.

Their 'sound' came from their fingers, not whatever axe they happened to be playing.

cheers!

I prefer the Woodstock recording of red house over any other. Obviously that was on a strat.

Allan; do you have any advice for delay settings. I played around today and got a pretty nice approximation, a good start. I'll audition most of my equipment this weekend, see what comes closest. Work, work, work! :)

Jimi made use of several brands during his days from `67-`70 he played righty black Les Paul at several concerts and also famously used a lefty Flying V at the Isle of Wight. For his appearance on the Dick Cavatt show he played a white SG bodied `61 Les Paul Custom with a Maestro vibrato. His favourite guitar for writing music wasn't electric as many would think but was an old Epiphone dreadnaught which he brought to England when he got "discovered" and is still in the possession of Jimi's only "real" girlfriend throughout his tenure in Britain,Kathy Etchingham.Sorry Lightnin' but you have Jimi's Newport guitar info a bit backwards. At Newport Jimi played a white Strat with a Tele neck.I have an interview with Gerry Stickles,Jimi's tech/road manager buried in my "Jimi Archives" and he says that at the concert immediately before Newport Jimi had snapped the neck of a Strat that he particularly loved the sound of.When they got to Newport area,Gerry went looking for a replacement Strat neck but was only able to find a Tele neck which was an easy fit in the Strat body whereas in order for a Strat neck to go in a Tele, the neck pocket of the Tele would have to be routed to accommodate the rounded butt end of the Strat neck.BTW you can identify the Newport Festival by the white Strat with the Tele neck as well as Jimi wore the same blue kimono that he wore on the Dick Cavatt Show with blue velvet pants.

The two things that first popped into my head: (1) using a Strat's neck pup (single coil, no humbucker), and (2) playing with the mids on the amp.

Well, the Strat purists can rest at ease. I'm no where near nailing it. But I got pretty nice tone last night at rehearsal and humbuckers don't cut it. Strat on neck pup all the way.

I should re-record my effort, the one I linked is over a decade ago, my setup and playing has changed a bit since then.

Andy, have fun playing Red House. I don't know anything about Red House except that it is a great blues song, Jimi, Noel and Mitch played Red House when I saw them in 1968 at the Hollywood Bowl. I am listening to a copy of that concert (track 3 is Red House)while writing, Brother Chet mailed it to me, thanx again Chet! 9:47 of Jimi blue, amazing!

Jimi sounds awesome with a flying V, even if he looks miserable with the thing. I'll take whatever Hendrix I can get.

As Nicola Tesla stated, the sound did indeed come from their fingers but then again there was a marked difference in the overall tone of "Red House"-and other songs too-when Jimi played it on a Flying V rather than his usual Stra, you'll find too that this applies to just about all other players.I have found that even with my guitars, there are some guitars that just really have the perfect tone for certain songs, especially the lead breaks and by the same token, there are some guitars that just won't cut it.There are many dynamics that affect the final sound that you hear coming from the amp,or even a different acoustic guitar for that matter.
