What do you think you know?
A new band I'm practicing with is going to do Red House. I know I'm never going to sound like Jimi, but his tone on this recording is something to strive for, so I'm trying to gather ideas to help me get the vibe.
One site I was on said that he used a Les Paul for Red House.
There's parts of the song where either a longer delay is kicked in or there are short overdubbed parts. If you listen with headphones, these are pretty apparent.
I'll have a modern Marshall to use. I'm not sure of the model but it sounds pretty decent.
Anyone have any info on the recording of this song or gear suggestions to recreate his sound for this song? Much appreciated!

For "Red House" I dial my amp in for plenty of OD and compression and use my Strat's neck pickup with its tone control rolled mostly all the way down.

To play this masterpiece you will need a LOT of balls apart from the tonal components of the composition.

And .. don't pay too much attention to what amp or guitar you use.
You can simply do it, or you can't ..

Good luck and let us know the outcome.

:D

A little prolly wouldn't hurt.

Don't over-do though.

I think the solos are in pentatonic major, right?

Here's my band having a crack at it, not trying to cop Jimi by a long shot (as if I could anyway) and a bit more laid back, female vocals too. This was from about 12 years ago, Vocals, Bass, Drums and Guitar, all set up in the same room, played together in one take, I think I used my Strat plugged into my Blues Junior for this.

"Red House" is one of those songs that shows the personality of every cover band. You should do your own version of it. Make it sound your way. imo.

I don't know how accurate this info is,but I read in an article about Jimi that Noel Redding had said that the guitar used to record Red House was an old solid body Hofner which was in such poor shape that one of the pickups was held in place with gaffer's tape. I have been playing covers of Red House for years, starting off the lead break like Jimi's version and after a few bars, putting my own spin on it and I have always used the neck and middle pickups of my Strat with my delay set on about 3 repeats at a medium repeat speed. For the lead break I use my Marshall Guv'nor overdriven just enough to get a bit of dirt and sustain.I always use my old JCM 800,2204 and with a bit of twiddling on the controls,I can get a pretty good representation of a late 60s 1959 on a clean setting.

I don't have Jimi's chops, so there's no way in hell it will be anything other than my version of it. It's just that the sound of his guitar on this song is etched in my brain and it would do my psyche well to stand up on stage and hear something close to his tone coming out of my amp. So I'm going to give it a shot.

Thanks Guitslinger. I'm going to play around with my Od's and delay this weekend. Maybe I'll have something to bring to rehearsal and see what I can get from the backline Marshall.

I find very hard to believe that Jimi used a LP or other guitar besides his trusty Strat, but who knows for sure. Red House is one of the best blues/rock tunes of all time.
