Hey guys!!

I haven't posted on here in forever, but I would love some input in regards to an audition I have in March. The audition is to get into the Music Therapy program at my college, and I would love any/all advice you guys have to offer! :)

I have a choice between a classical concentration or a jazz concentration, and I am auditioning for jazz. I've already auditioned once before(last year), but I didn't get in because I chose to write my own piece, and they didn't like it much. My sight-reading skills weren't up-to-par either, but I think a lot of it had to do with me not having an actual teacher to help prepare me for the audition.

But, now I just officially scheduled private lessons with my old guitar teacher(who studied at Berklee), and things are actually starting to take shape!!

However, I'd still love to hear from you guys to see if you have any parting words of wisdom for me as I embark on this new journey in my life.

Thank you in advance!! :D

Hi Khashoggi

wow im so jealous, that sounds like a totally worthwhile and very rewarding field to get into. From my understanding of the subject I think a lot of it will involve preventative therapy options, so teaching people to express themselves before therapy is needed to help resolve issues (if that makes sense), which I think is fantastic. I always tell people that just singing as much as possible is amazingly therapeutic, even if just for how it regulates your breathing let alone what it can do to your mind.

Im guessing the best way to prepare would be to try to learn the basics on as many different instruments as possible so you get familiar with the problems a total novice would face when trying to express themselves through each type of instrument, and generally swatting up on counselling and psychotherapy so you know the rules, because as we all know, you need to know the rules so you can know when to break them.

Best of luck and please keep us updated, always great to hear what other forum members are up to.

Olly

Turn it to 11 and throw on the bridge pickup. All the therapy I need. :P

Really, though, I find reverb and fingerpicking to be very relaxing. Trt a little bit of that in there. Be tasteful and don't overdo it, though.

Hi Khashoggi - this is a very good road to travel
that appears to be increasing a lot lately. Here is
a blog of others in the field that might give you
some ideas on how to prepare:

Good luck!

Are there certain criteria the school is looking for?
When I auditoned to a jazz college almost 20 years ago, there was a whole entrance exam. There was theory, ear training tests and of course and audition piece.
We were asked to play an instrumental that contained a chording and melody.
I chose Tears in Heaven, which they told me was good, but was more of an accompaniment piece.

Good to see your post Khashoggi! Very cool that you've chosen music therapy studies at your college! Having your guitar teacher help with your audition is a great idea. You'll get in this time for sure. Keep us posted on your progress in those classes whenever you can find the time lol. :D
