Hi everyone.

I'm having a problem with a lot of buzzing when I play. It was quite quiet until very recently when it got really loud. If I hold the guitar in certain positions the volume of the buzz will go up or down. I'm just wondering if you guys know how to solve this or if you have any ideas.

I have a Blacktop Jaguar HH and I play it through a Frontman 25R amplifier.

Thank you in advance for any help provided.
:)

a good setup should take care of it.

a 'setup' refers to some basic guitar maintenance. A technician will go over the guitar and make adjustments that will fix the fret buzz. Sometimes the buzz is caused by recent changes you have made, such as going from one string gauge to another. Sometimes the guitar has just 'settled' during regular use, and needs adjustments to put everything back in place.

Are you talking about fret buzz or an electrical buzzing noise through the amp?

Did you put anything new in that room like a space heater or something?

More of an electrical buzz, it happens even when i'm not playing
and nothing new in the room, but my laptop was turned on when it usually isn't?

Well having a neck and action setup won't cure that!

All single coil pickups are prone to electromagnetic interference so you'll never completely get rid of the buzz but it's worth checking that the shielding inside the guitar is properly grounded and that the ground ire on the trem claw hasn't come loose. Other than that you're in the same boat as everyone else who uses single coils pickups, get used to moving away from strip lights, dimmer switches, computer monitors and anything else that generates an electromagnetic field.

Also don't keep your phone in your trouser pocket. Nothing sounds worse at a gig than that sudden CLICK-CLICK-CLICK-CLICK-CLICK as a phone starts receiving a text message or call!

That is quite possibly the culprit. Some laptops are very badly insulated, and will send out lots of electromagnetic interference. They have a fan, but the main culprit tends to be the high voltage power inverter for the display. If so, try to turn the laptop 90 degrees and see whether it helps. Or move it.

Ground loops can also happen - especially if you hook up the laptop with USB to another powered device, or cable to the TV, or otherwise anything with ground going to another device. If so, ferrite beads (cost a couple of bucks) on the cables can help quite a bit.

If nothing else helps, a hum eliminator pedal might be your best choice.

If my hunch is right, and you are referring to a persistent electric buzz, it could be a number of things, only a few which could be related to your rig.
Try to isolate the extraneous suspects first.
*unplug everything in the room (or on the circuit) except your amp.
Those little plug-in night-lights and other lamps and devices that have small power supplies in-line with the power cord are notorious buzzers.
Also, if you have dimmer switches or a failing flourescent ballast on the circuit, that'll make it buzz.
Plug it all back in one at a time to see if there culprit is one of those.

Rig-related:
If it was once quiet and fine, then something's changed.
The position of your guitar/amp relative to an electric source,
or something as simple as flakey cable.
I had one go bad once, and it acted like an antenna, picking up all the radiated 60Hz in the room,
and it got better/worse as I moved around.

There's probably a million other things that I'm confident other experts here will contribute,
but that's the easy stuff to check first.
