From personal experience the low end PRS suffer the exact same problem as the low end Gibsons. Paying for the name. You can get MUCH better guitars (*cough*fender*cough*) than their SE series for the same price.

Or perhaps one of their "Prophecy" models which either have Floyd Roses or EMG pups. Take your pick.

EDIT: The prophecy SG does not have a Floyd Rose, but the GX model has DIRTY FINGERS pickups and the EX has EMG pickups. And they're different colors.

AFAIK the G400 have the slim taper (60s?) neck profile. Definately not fat on mine, anyway. And IMO the prophecy series looks terrible. Gaudy as hell. I mean whats with those fake jeweled knobs and those horrible inlays ?!

Well my Bird's eye LP is made of mahogany and maple; hmmm just like Gibson says the Gibson LP is made of as my Firebirrd is made of mahogany the gibson is made of mahogany and mahogany/walnut laminate neck, and my dot is made of laminated maple; Gibson says the 335 is made of "plain maple" what ever that is.
So according to Epiphone and Gibson they are made of possibly SLIGHTLY different materials; is the difference worth thousands ?
I got my info from the Gibson/Epiphone and Epiphone sites.

Gibsons selling all kinds of guitars under 1000 - the "rough" or whatever series. They're trying to compete with Fender and to do it they're trying some different ways to make the guitars, like less paint, etc. I'm not really into Gibsons because they're too heavy and I love my Strats, but these "distressed" or whatever they call them bargain Gibsons look like the best bet to me. I'd definitely get one over an Epiphone. Who wants a freakin' binding on a guitar anyway? Is this 1919?

Whenever you hear a guitar is "laminate" that means it ain't that wood. Like, my incredible value Highway One is alder, maple neck with a walnut skunk stripe and rosewood fret board. It's really those woods. A laminate is a series of thin strips glued together, like I think our Taylor Big Baby is a laminate. Is it going to effect the weight, durability and tone? Maybe.

The only Epiphone I would see myself buying would be a Casino - to satisfy the nagging Beatle freak in the back of my brain.

Imho, we should all keep a place in our hearts for Gibson and PRS. Those are guitars for guitar makers and guitar lovers. Super massive craftsmanship and labor, mother of pearl flying birds, trapezoids, whatever. These are guitar makers who love guitars making beautiful guitars. Now, when it's time to play get the Fender because that's the guitar for musicians.

PRS guitars are made for musicians, i would much rather buy a prs then a gibson any day.

they do more and imo look much better then a lp

I have an Epi Dot Studio and I love it. It plays great feels great and it was only $200.00. I really wanted a Hallow body so I went for this one. Cant beat the price. Go to a Guitar Center and Try one out they are grea. here is a picture of mine.

If you are talking custom 22 or a custom 24 top ten yes but no way
could you compare a SE to a Gibson. At one time the SE was
even considerd as a student guitar by Paul Reed Smith themselfs
thats way they started that line which is not made here in Maryland.
The SE over priced for 500. a Std Strat or Tele MIM is the better deal
in my opinion and a 100. less in most cases.

I wasnt talking about se's i mean the real deal prs's i agree with you on buy a fender for close to the same money, my point is if you are going to buy a lp for 4000 to 8000 i would rather buy me a PRS for less money then a gibson and have, imo a better guitar!!

Laminates on electric guitars aren't that bad. Even high spec guitars have laminate tops (like Gibson flamed' maple tops). Hell even on acoustics they're not bad, they do have a use. I wouldn't buy an all laminate but I have no qualms buying one with laminated back and sides.

I'm not that crazy about our Taylor Big Baby with the laminate. The guitars very nicely made, but my wife spec'd the action high for herself (oops dear that's not how you want a guitar) and because it's undersized a bit the Big Baby doesn't have the volume my old trashed Yamaha had. It's not the laminate though, which actually looks great.

Reference PRSs, I was talking about the regular ones, too, not the SEs. If I had one of those multi-thousand things, I wouldn't play it. I'd just hang it on a wall and look at it every now and then, like a painting. For playing, Fender gives me what I want and need at a reasonable price because ever since Leo, Fender has listened to musicians.
