cuz I was thinking of getting an epiphone SG instead of a gibson SG but I dont know if the epiphone is cheaply made or what

is it the equivalent of squire to gibson?

I've always made the same comparison myself.

It's a good comparison. The Epi's aren't made in the US, just like Squier, so the quality not on par most of the time. Quality Control not as good. The wood, electronics are supposed to be of a "lesser" quality. Some Epi's would give the Gibson model a run for their money. If money is no object, Gibson is the way to go, but for a diff'ce of (sometimes) $1000 - not in the SG, but the LP - it would be wise to at least ck out the Epi.

I'd stay away from the real cheap Epiphone stuff, it's crap. Most of their mid to higher priced line like the Les Paul Custom are nice guitars for the money.

I "might" consider a high-end Epi, but at that point, I'd just save a bit more and get the Gibson. In general, Gibsons have always been way overpriced to me, compared to what else you can get for the same amount of money. I'd much rather have a PRS custom 24 or 513 than a Les Paul anyday.

But for acoustics, some of the better epis are a good value. The Epi Humminbird in particular is only a few hundred, solid top, looks good, and plays and sounds real nice for the cash. And I'm REAL funny about acoustics.

When it comes to Gibsons you're paying from the name. I've heard that you can import an Edwards (I think? Might be Burny) for cheaper from Japan, and they still use unchambered bodies and full tenon neck joins, and give the high end Gibsons a real run for their money! All comes down to whether you want the name 'Gibson' on the headstock. If I had the money sure and wanted an LP I'd get a Gibby, but otherwise hell no - I'd get a copy from another maker.

I have had both and still have two Epi's myself and I for one would
tell you that my LP Custom Plus is better than the two Gibson I had
one of which I gave my son. The custon plus I have was made
in Korea with a Mahogany body flame maple top and curly
maple neck, finish is heritage cherry. At 799.00 it plays and sounds
better then both Gibson that cost double the price. It is hard to find
Epi's that are made in Korea most seem to come from Indonsia and
China also I believe I read that Epi own's it's plants over seas
and does not source them all out. It fact I saw a video showing
a Gibson factory in China and it looked as though it quility control
people looked like they were all from the Nashville location. I also
no that all there Lp's are inspected and set up when they arive in the
the U.S. before they ship out to be sold.

Power, I have an Epi LP Classic- would I prefer a Gibson? Of course- can I afford $2000-$3000? Not unless someone wants to bless me with it :)
That being said, when I wanted to get another LP (to replace the 1970 Gibby LP Deluxe I bought when I was a lad) -I knew it would have to be an Epi- I went to GC and spent 3 days, yes 3 days going through every LP that caught my fancy until I found one that was the quality I would settle for. It's a very very decent axe - it's not a Gibson, but it was definately worth the money I spent for it. I also have a Squier Strat that I bought used for $85 as a "worry free" guitar to leave at my office. Best $85 I ever spent. It plays like a dream.
So the point of this long winded speal? If you only have $500 to spend and you want an SG? Try a bunch - you'll find one.

He's probably talking about the Epi factory-remember they are owned by Gibson- just like the Squier factory in China- they have Fender people there.

Quote:
The video was showing a Gibson buit factory for the Epi line of
guitars instead of subing out to a factory that builds gutars for
other lines they built only Epi's and the factory is owned by Gibson
itself and was being managed by people from U.S. They still have
many built at other locations though for Epiphone but it was interesting
to see that Gibson built and run this oversea factory for there Epi. line.
As you no some factorys make guitars fo muiltible companys. I am not
sure but I think I heard the the PRS SE line is made by the same place
that makes Agile guitars though I have not been able to confirm that
yet. I do no the ones I have looked at come from Korea.

I just had a friend of mine buy an Epiphone Studio Dot a month ago. When he got it, it said, "made in China". Also......every time he plays it, the fret board turns his fingers black......although.....the black fingers thingie, seems to be slowing down. (mmmmm.....I wonder....with all the lead stuff coming out of China.......could his fingers be turning black from that?)
