After a 2 month wait, today my Vision Octavia from Roger Mayer Products finally arrived. I couldn't wait to try it out but was very surprised to find that there was neither an owner's manual or even a warranty card with it.I immediately phoned Moog Music in Montreal, who I had ordered it from and they said that no paperwork was included in the packages that they received. So I sent an email to Roger to see if in fact they were supposed to be included. In the meantime there is a basic operating guide on the R.M.P. website and I was able to garner enough info to be able to get started with experimenting with the sounds that the pedal was capable of.I dialed in a tone that I found satisfactory and played the intro to "Purple Haze" and then the lead break and right away was thrust into goosebump territory. This little pedal is the real thing for Hendrix covers and is way way better than octave pedals that I am using or ever have used.I played the lead break of "Little Wing" going through my RotoChoir and Danelectro delay pedal and the outcome was a spot on cover of the tone of the cut from Axis Bold As Love.Tomorrow I hope to get into a full-fledged Hendrix session with a try at "Machine Gun","One Rainy Wish" and if I can get the amp loud enough.."Little Miss Lover" that song and "Machine Gun" are bound to be a huge challenge. With 3 outputs and each one having different tonal properties and 3 pots controlling the gain, tone and output, there is quite a learning curve involved as every time you adjust a control it affects the settings of the others.Even though this pedal isn't the same aesthetically and doesn't contain the schematics of the original,it is the same one that Jimi used at the DEC.31 1969 concert where he used it for his famous mind blowing performance of "Machine Gun" and "Who Knows".Along with it being able to cover the tonal footprint of Jimi's later songs from the Fillmore,Cry Of Love and Rainbow Bridge, it is also wired to be able to emulate the exact tones of the original "Rocket Octavia" with its strange UFO shape.I can't wait to get the music room up and running.(We have started gutting out the old music room-but that's another story.)As soon as I can get the new and much larger music room operational,I'll be able to get out the old JCM 800 stack which is inaccessible now due to being blocked in by piles of accumulated books magazines etc. and then I'll be able to give the Octavia the workout it was supposed to be used for.

Congrats, my brother...I'd love to hear some sound samples!

It's amazing how the Hendrixian legacy still grows. He died when I was a baby, but my 20-something nephew (who's not even a musician) loves his stuff, as do a lot of his friends. It speaks across generations!

Hey Derek I get the impression that when your time comes ( a long way off yet ), you're going to have a lighter fluid cremation  congrats on the new Pedal

A lighter fluid cremation sounds cool-of course it would have to be accompanied by the Monterey version of "Wild Thing".After a couple of days of being able to experiment with different settings,I have found that the Octavia performs best with a distortion in front of it,you can really enhance the dual octave signal and get the weeping violin type sustain that Jimi got when using the OctaviaBlinkers was down yesterday evening and he was really impressed with the rig,it really livens up the signal and can take a lacklustre lead break and make it great..I am still having a bit of bother trying to get a very clean dual octave signal, but I should be able to get it eventually, with some more trial and error.
So far my set-up is: Flipped black R/W Strat(mirror image of the first Monterey Strat)-volume pedal-'67 Vox Clyde McCoy Signature wah-circa 1970 ram's head Big Muff Pi-late 80s metal body Marshall Guv'nor-Vision Octavia-Danelectro Echo/Delay-Tech 21 NYC RotoChoir Leslie simulator. When I get my music room set up as a permanent fixture I intend to add a few more of my pedals in the chain so that I can emulate more of Jimi's tones in a live setting.I still have to put in a chorus,a Vibe,2 flangers,a phase shifter and another digital delay.

On a song such as "House Burning Down" or "Gypsy Eyes" (which Jimi wrote for Kathy Etchingham) you have to use 2 delays with 1 set on a slow repeat and the other set on medium repeat and the flangers too have to have one set on a slow and long sweep and the other on a medium sweep. It takes quite a bit of twiddling initially to get the effect's signals balanced right, but when you have it set up just right (and mark your settings or course!!!),the overall effect is just plain incredible.Of course you have to run the distortion pedal and Octavia through this setup too in order to get the true sound of the cut on the album.
