Well, I think the lesson is that, if you're writing a song and want to be original don't use the E-B-C#-A chord progression, but if you want a hit song you should

That's hilarious, in a cynical sort of way. :?

The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Led Zep, Cream and so many others all covered American blues and rock and roll performers to hone their chops so to speak. But, it has got to be pretty embarrassing when any artist gets caught using another artist work without their approval, wait, they ripped off other artists, they can't be embarrassed, too greedy

Well there are millions of songs out there, unless you do something really unorthodox, there's a big chance you have the same chord progressions as thousands of others ;)

This is more interesting I think..

I'm gonna go with Patty Hill and Mildred J. Hill's 'Happy Birthday' song (1893)...

I was gonna go with 'White Christmas', but even Muslims and Jews sing Happy Birthday...

cheers!

Hmm, so the Beatles ripped off Journey to write & record Let it Be?
I know it's got tongue in cheek to a degree--but why not say that the other songs ripped off the oldest song?
(I didn't watch the whole thing so I don't know if there's an older song.)

This is the same idea, and funnier...

Actually, George Harrison was sued over the song "My Sweet Lord" because it was a total ripoff of "He's So Fine". He lost.

I remember the Rolling Stones in the 1990's being sued by k.d. lang for "Anybody Seen My Baby". I think the Stones just gave in on the case.

"Stairway to Heaven" sounds like a Spirit song, for a couple bars.

There's a zillion songs that sound like Chuck Berry. Chuck must have heard Willie Dixon at some time, which might have come from Ray Brown or Charles Mingus. Maybe the whole thing goes back to Louis Armstrong.

That pic of Ah Ha! is so bad.

The guys who actually recorded that never actually implied that any song was stealing from another, but they've had their compilation used on this persons video. It was just a cool demonstration of that common chord progression we all know so well. In fact even this persons video doesn't actually imply that any one song is stealing from the other and it's obvious that they are not anywhere near chronological order. No one is trying to accuse The Beatles of ripping anyone else off here.

Incidentally this is a great party trick, chopping and changing between lots of famous songs, people who don't understand music really love it

Hey, most of the Chuck Berry's songs start in the same way as well  The other day while I was listening to an album of his I go - "oooh yeah Johnny Be Good.. wait..nah..". Next song "ok this is it, GO JOHNNY GO..erm..ok..still not the one". After a couple more times it was Johnny time at last

In that video, Waltzing Matilda.
Of course, Pachebel's Canon in D is also a I-V-vi-IV chord progression.
Clearly plagiarizing Miley Cyrus' Wrecking Ball.

That's pretty cool.

The chord progression doesn't always mean you
need to have the same melodies either.

Makes one wonder how many songs like 'Johnny B Goode' are around using the basic I-IV-V progression.
