I think HSS strats suffer from a bad design, in that if you use the humbucker, you only have one working tone control. I know it'd be unlike other strats, but in this case it would make more sense to have one tone dial for the humbucker and the other for the singles. I'm no fan of separate tone controls, but when the pickups are very different, it can serve a good purpose. But it's not possible on a HSS strat, despite it having two tone dials.

Unless you rewire the guitar with master volume and tone (or master volume, tone and active mid boost) affecting all the pickups.

Hi guys: I totally get that we might want a dedicated tone control for the humbucker on an HSS. And for that it's perfectly easy to adjust the wiring so the first tone knob does neck+middle and the second one just controls the bridge pickup.

Here's the service diagram:

http://support.fender.com/service_diagr ... A_SISD.pdf

To achieve the above, we just need to move the second tone pot over to the humbucker's lug on the selector switch (third from left, instead of second from left where it's currently hooked up) and move that tiny jumper wire to join lugs one+two, instead of two+three as presently configured.
Quick and easy. Strats are great that way. :)
Cheers - C

Yep. I did that to my Strat the day I bought it, 20-some-odd years ago...of course, mine's SSS config, but the principle's the same.

I love the new Select Strat HSS Exotic Maple Flame... (except) - I wish they'd put the nice bird's eye maple on the head stock instead of the rosewood... -even as a thick laminated veneer over the rosewood. It just looks odd to me with the contrast - perhaps I'm in the minority, but I doubt it.

BTW; I love rosewood. It still say it looks odd in this build. I'm sure it's partially a tone issue, but a laminated bird's eye maple cap would have set it off better in my humble opinion.

It also needs push-pull pots and controls to blend the pickups from the factory. No one should have to buy a $3000 guitar and then have to become an engineer and mechanic to finish it properly.

I have a 92' California Fat Strat that is every bit as nice- and it was only $1200 at the time, with pearl inlays on the maple neck to boot. Seems like prices have climbed recently. what happened to the pearl inlays these days? While it is good to see Fender providing some high-end competition to PRS and Gibson, there's more work that needs to be done. Keep up the efforts...

I wouldn't trade my Strat for anything. It's a beauty. It was a bargain. I wish I knew how to attach a picture here. you could see it for yourself.

I love the Selects. I own a 2012 Select Tele.

But the aged or parchment colored parts are hideous on them. It doesn't suit what is a modern version of the strat/tele. What about a black PG and hardware? If I bought any of these the first thing I'd do is rip off the pee colored plastic.

I like this one, but it was a ltd.

Oh, and while I'm at it, I hate the large headstock too :) Again, if your going to do a modern take on a classic, the old headstock just doesn't fit.

As much as those guitars looks so sweet they hurt my teeth, I do agree about the aged plastic look (although I wouldn't call it 'hideous'). It just kind of 'sticks out' in a bad way.

I am going to take a different view here ... They are absolutely beautiful ... no argument there whatsoever. But to me ... some how ... really overly pretty Fenders look almost out of place. They just don't appeal to me. The simple beauty of Fender is the "utilitarian" in their blood lines. Compare a 1959 Gibson Les Paul to a similar time Tele or Strat. ..... I am not making any sense, am I?

This is why I am glad we have choices. Besides some Custom Shop fenders, and the Selects, maybe some special run models, Fender has NOTHING else that appeals to me anymore. That tele shot above is the guitar I have hated the most since I was a child. The butterscotch tele with black PG is so overdone and common now it's "just another tele".

I don't want a guitar that looks like everyone else's. Which is why I like the idea of the Selects. I just wish they would get the Selects right. Some of the their design choices puzzle me. They got the right idea, but aren't putting out what people really want. For example, the first year you couldn't get a SSS Strat with a rosewood neck before. Even now they are hard to find. If you wanted Rosewood, you had to get HSS. Then they released a nice new channeled neck last year but they stuck the controversial large headstock on it, AND it was Hss. I'm seeing some more different configs this year, but they slapped aged parts on everything now :(

Makes me wonder if they should just set up a design your own select program like the American Design one.
