So, something arrived today in the post...

Image

What could it be?

Image

OH!

Image

"A big box of wood?" I hear you ask.

Image

A really big box of wood.

Image

Image

And these guys;

Image

The sides came pre-bent, which is convenient for those of us who don't own bending irons and are afraid of blowtorches.

Image

Unfortunately, we're all out of daylight here, so I can't really do anything fun just yet, so...

Image

Anyway, on to the details. This is going to be a copy of a Martin OM, with black walnut back and sides and probably a spruce top. (The tea is Marks and Spencers' Gold Blend loose leaf).
I should say at the outset, however, that if you've clicked on this thread in the hopes of instant gratification, you're going to be disappointed. I have most of next week off for study-leave though, so I should be able to get some stuff done then.

Best of luck with the build! I see you have a large box of Tunnock's Teacakes to aid you along should there be a crisis.

Yes, well guitar building is a long, arduous process. Naturally, at some point I'm bound to have a mental episode and shave all my hair off.

Look for a PM by me in your inbox.

I saw it. Thanks again, the package wasn't even addressed to me, so its doubly good you spotted that.

It was my pleasure to be of service.

Looks like a great project, by the way.
Looking forward to more pics.

Yay - build thread! :)

Agh - disappointed!

But seriously. Excited - is this the first acoustic build on the Forum? Kudos! 8)

What glue are you going to use, Tochai?

Also, while we're waiting for work to begin, kindly supply more details. Where did you get those pre-bent sides? Where are you shopping for a soundboard? What are your thoughts on bracing? What about neck timber?

Etc.

Meantime:

Mm. Tricky, but I'm sure we can overcome this particular problem.

I hate to report that I haven't actually made any progress as yet. There are scholarships at stake, so I'm taking this A-Level business quite seriously, to the detriment of my other endeavours.

Is there any other kind?

Everything so far has come from a nice English gentleman on ebay. Other materials will likely be similarly sourced. On the tea front, there are a few artisan blenders here in The Province, but I haven't been terribly impressed with any of them. Marks and Spencers' is by far the best available option.

Yeah, well get comfortable. :lol: I guess in the interest of holding the public's interest I should post a picture of my previous output. Unfortunately, all I have on hand is one fairly poor photo I took on my phone;

Image

That's a Cedar/Rosewood folk-style based around a Lowden F shape, with ebony fretboard and mahogany neck. I'll get some better photos and maybe a sound clip for you once these exams finish.

Until then!

Tochai, now we understand why you were attuned to the prevalence of Lowdens on the acoustic videos thread. If that's your handiwork I for one would certainly love to see better, more detailed photos, if you felt like sharing. Building acoustics puts you into a different league, far as this Forum is concerned. Respect.

Scholarships. To Newark, perhaps...? (A premier school of instrument making, for those as don't know.)

Titebond. Of course, there's nothing to say against that respectable choice. And yet... A gentleman making, by the looks of it, rapid progress up the luthiery ladder might now be considering stepping into the grown-up world of hide glue. Superior in every meaningful way: the prefered adhesive for the discerning hand-builder of fine stringed instruments.

If you can't find it in the local shops you can order it from axminster.co.uk ; they list it as "pearl glue". Same thing. If you want to discuss how to work with hide glue, just ask.

And now most importantly, tea. When I'm in Ireland I find Bewley's of Dublin as tasty as the heart could desire. Is their product not available in shops in Northern Ireland?

If not, then of course the finest tea on the planet is Taylors of Harrogate. I'm not talking of their Yorkshire Tea teabags, which you can surely get in your supermarket - though they're perfectly nice. I speak of their proper leaf tea: mmmmm! :) If you can't get it locally then you can always order online:

http://www.taylorsofharrogate.co.uk

You know it makes sense!

Enjoy - C
