When I bought my Epi Nighthawk, I asked for new strings, Dean Markley Blue Steel 10's, and a set up. The bill only charged me for strings, so I thought I got a free set up with the purchase.
After playing it for the last month, it has some buzzes, so I began to think it wasnt set up, just a string change. I broke the high E, and when I changed it it feels thicker and has more tension than the other strings. Could he have put 9's on it or does it feel tight for another reason?

Very subjective as to what "feels tight" means. Couldn't answer your question without having the guitar in hand.

Sure it's possible that the new string is a heavier gauge than the one that was on there. A heavier gauge is going to feel like more tension.
A plausible scenario...

Strings stretch and become softer with age. If you've had the strings on for a month or more, they can feel "thinner" compared to the new string.

That said, a digital caliper is a useful tool. I recommend getting one if you don't have one.

Yoda, there are possibilities, I can only think of one. Changing strings from one brand to another. For me, going from Ernie Ball to Daddario the Daddario strings felt
a little different and then to LaBelle strings the difference was more notable. Hope that helps.

Yeah, I guess it could be any number of things. It is definitley a diferent brand of replacement string. I figure I'll just restring the whole guitar and give it a set up.

So I figured out the problem. I put a G string on by mistake!
Let the flogging commence.

wow, you put a g where the high e goes? Yeah that would feel a little stiff - lol. Did you manage to get it in tune that way?

The guitar was tuned a half step down, but yes It was in tune.
I tuned it up to standard tuning last night and I was expecting it to break. I kept thinking something is not right here, so I decided to take the string off and put a different one on. When I pulled the new string out I realized I put a different string on it. Whoops! All is good now, but it could still use a bit of tweaking.

So some effeminate underwear made the guitar play differently? :P
