It all starts with the guitar. You can't play an amplifier "with feeling".

I guess you have to decide for yourself on how to balance the two.

No, you can't play an amp with a "feeling", but a cruddy, sterile, junky, one dimensional amp will hold you back.

True.

What I have in the back of my mind on that whole debate, is that the acoustic guitar was invented long before any amp came around, but does that relate to the decision of which of the two is most important to originally own?

I started good amp first, and felt the whole time I shoulda bought a better bass, instead. I had a burgers and fries Kent bass to learn on, that I would've never wanted to plug in anyway. Nobody wants to hear someone learning a bass.

Sorry for the late reply

I'm more towards the rock and jazz genre and I still haven't defined whether I'm playing rhythm or lead guitar. But generally, I just want soft, creamy sounds.... Not punk rock or metal...

My guitar hero has got to be Eric Clapton...

Additional Info:
I've been playing drums for 3 years and piano for 5 years...

I'm pretty committed to playing instruments/music in general.

As said, I'm not under any budget... just a durable, playable guitar. I'm not under any budget for amps either; preferably something that can be used for a couple years

Btw, thanks for the replies

Ametrix, Mate, you need to go and play some guitars, Fenders and others.
You seem to appreciate quality and have the dedication. Only you can choose.
USA made doesn't mean much to some, but to others, it means everything.
Just deal with reputable people and try out some gear. Have fun.

Goodonya ...Mark.

Ok, this gives us a better starting point...

Remember, you really need to try out everything you can get your hands on--Fender, Squier, Gibson, Epiphone, Gretsch, whatever...you need to pick up everything and anything and see what feels right for you.

Remember, I can't buy underwear that fits your butt--

Having said that, and knowing that Eric Clapton is your guitar hero, I would try these guitars first:

-American Standard Stratocaster with a maple fretboard
-1957 reissue Stratocaster (made in America)
-1950's classic Stratocaster (made in Mexico)
...or, if you are really well-heeled, try a Fender Eric Clapton Signature Stratocaster.

However, don't stick to Strats only (Clapton didn't/doesn't).

Also, you may like the feel/sound of a Strat with a rosewood fretboard better than maple (it makes no difference to me either way, I like both).

For amps, I would start out with a smaller tube amp.

Marshall Class 5
Fender Deluxe Reverb (great all-around amp)
Vox AC15 (adequate for gigging) or AC4 (not adequate for gigging unless mic'd)

All of these are good amps with great tone; once again, find the guitar that fits your hand and your needs, and then try that guitar with every amp you can....

Yeah, with Jazz as an interest, a semi-hollowbody, or something with a humbucker or P90 might be worth checking out too. The strat would normally not be the first choice for that.

But really, if serious about electric guitar, and multiple genres, I think you'll soon enough find that you want more than one guitar.

Warning: Guitars are addictive...nobody just keeps one.

The most important things are how the guitar fits you and how well it is set up.

There is nothing wrong with the upper end of the Squier line. Before you wear out the frets, you will probably own more guitars. I've still have my first electric, an ES335 copy (35+ years), an American Standard Strat, and a twin humbucker Carvin...and my main instrument is bass.

Amp wise, a 5 watt tube amp is pretty loud when over driven. For Jazz cleans, you can have more watts for head room...maybe 22 watts. Remember, a tube amp is rated at maximum non-distortion and the tone most of us are after is into tube saturation.

I prefer an amp head and separate cabinet. You can start with a single speaker and get a two or four speaker cabinet for band use when needed.

American Standard Strat (or Clapton) and Deluxe Reverb amp. And that's the truth. :D
