[quote="Ametrix"]I need advice on which electric guitar I should get. I'm not under any budget; I'd rather have a slightly more expensive durable, usable guitar rather than a cheaper one which would stop working in a few years.

I've just been playing a couple months. It'd be great if I could use some help on deciding.

Thanks[/quote

Since you did mention durability, I should point out that the Squier CV frets wear down much faster than the frets you would get on a MIM Standard, or American Standard.

If you do stick with playing, you'll likely turn into a gear junkie like everyone else on this forum. I started with a Squier (hindsight 20/20 I realize that mine, and not the brand in general, was not a $hit guitar). However, as motivation, I set goals for myself. After sticking with practicing and playing for 1 year, I upgraded to my first "real" guitar ... an MIM Strat. After playing for a second year and learning more about my likes/dislikes, I rewarded myself with a second, slightly more expensive option.

I'm not saying I'll have 30 guitars if I play for 30 years, but the 'stick and carrot' approach has worked well for me.

Good luck.

If you don't have to make any special allowances for small hands etc. and you're confident that you will stick with it and be commited,it would be better for you to invest in the best guitar that you can afford as that would be a guitar with much superior playability which consequently would be much easier on your hands when doing chords and you also wouldn't have to go through the bother of searching for a permanent guitar once you have become a competent player. There are many great Fender guitars in the market place and the guitar that you pick out will mostly depend on the type of music that you are into or whatever guitar appeals to you, because whatever guitar that you pick you will no doubt getting a first rate instrument to start out on.GoodLuck.

It was stated that money wasn't a concern, so get something you'll actually like. The more you like something, the more you'll play it.
But base the choice on what you're going to play too.

>implying

The point of a beginner instrument is to learn the ropes.

Setting up, maintenance, modding, and even an instrument that's durable enough to bang around. (poly finishes especially, most are made with depleted uranium like modern tanks)

Anyways, would you give a player right out of the gate (a few months into playing) a suped up guitar, or would you give them a nice guitar that fits their needs, gets the job done, and isn't going to set them back more than $500 in case they decide to switch instruments or quit?

Yes, there are no budget constraints, but that doesn't mean that American made is the best option, mainly due to pricepoint, and the issue of many quitting early on. I'm not saying he/she will, but I think it would be a crime for any guitar, especially one that's $1000+ to sit under a bed or in a closet.

I think you missed the point completely. I'm not recommending against Squier, but not for it either. My recommendation is to define what he/she is going to play and practice, and find which guitars best fit that category. That may or may not include Squier.

I just think it's wrong to recommend Squier because it's affordable when it was clearly stated that price was not a concern. If it can be recommended for other reasons over other guitars, good.

I think the OP should get a guitar he or she will be happy with, and I won't presume to say what that would be. Knowing what the OP is going to play would be useful before tossing off suggestions.

You don't recommend it just because it's affordable, you recommend it because it's just about the most playable lineup of beginner guitars on the market, and them being affordable is just a bonus.

A Stratocaster can cover just about everything regardless, so that point you made is basically null.

I think you're ignoring my point of Squiers being excellent guitars, for a beginner or even someone with years under their belt.

You're also ignoring the point that OP asked for BEGINNER guitars, as in something that is inexpensive, playable, and gets the job done until they get their footing. I don't know what era you were born in, but it's becoming harder and harder to find bad beginner guitars, especially with Squier.

Get with the times and try one. Made In USA means nothing nowadays.

I'm ignoring it because the OP never said that.

@Ametrix, You can't go wrong with a nice used MIM Strat/Tele.
They're easily upgradable with higher quality parts.
If you sell it later on, you won't lose money.
Squiers are OK, but ......

Goodonya ...Mark.

How do you know? Have you seen beginners struggle playing more expensive brands?

It most certainly cannot. Strats are great, but for the kind of music and playing that strats do well. If the OP wants to play Jazz or other music where single coils are too noisy and the lack of 22-24 frets can be an issue, or country where you want "twang", or black metal where you need something considerably hotter with a fret width and radius better suited for barre chords, it's not a good choice.

Again, first figure out what the guitar is going to be used for, and then make recommendations. To blurt out Squier without knowing marks you as a fanboi, not someone I would recommend anyone taking any advice from.

Sure. If a Squier fits, by all means, play one. But it doesn't always fit. How big percentage of the top guitar players "with years under their belt" use one? How many started on one because it was what they could afford, and switched as soon as they could?

Sure, Squiers are great. They beat having no guitar, and you most certainly can learn on them. But they're not great for everything, nor best at anything. They're great precisely because they allow people with little money to play a decent guitar. That doesn't automatically make it the best or only choice for people of means.

He or she did nothing of the sort. The OP specifically said "I'd rather have a slightly more expensive durable, usable guitar rather than a cheaper one which would stop working in a few years."

It seems rather clear that the OP is not interested in "something that is inexpensive, playable, and gets the job done until [...]", but something that lasts past that "until" of yours.

Yes, for example, a lot of set necks like Epiphones can get a little on the meaty side. (in my experience from a lot of the ones I've tried out) A large neck probably isn't the best choice for someone who has just started, considering it can affect comfort level, which can affect the way someone plays.

Tell me, without dancing around my question, what is "the kind of music and playing that strats do well?" It's not the guitar, it's the hands holding it. Would you say the chisel made the statue, or was it the craftsman? Also, watch CMT, you're bound to see a Stratocaster in a country video. Dave Murray of Iron Maiden uses a Stratocaster, yes, it's modified, but again, a Squier Stratocaster is the perfect mod platform. I'm also friends with a guy who uses a MIM S/S/S Stratocaster (bone stock) for metal.

Again, your sound is what you make it, and only you set your limitations. I said Squier because a Stratocaster covers a wide range. You have to think about OP, they were vague, knowing how many genres of music there are, and knowing that people can use their gear for anything means that I'm going to suggest something flexible. You're not very good for advice because you dismissed a whole brand and you set limitations for yourself. "My guitar can't do _____." is a $@!&#* excuse for "I can't do _____."

Also, if anything, I'm a Guild fanboy. I no longer own any Fender products.

I never said it was the only choice. I said it was one of the best because (read around, not gonna bother with retyping the same bullshit over and over, and I guess you have decent enough reading comprehension skills.)

Read the title, asshat.

Also, notice how there are a lot 20 something year old Squiers?? yea, explain it, biatch.

Now you're selectively quoting me and taking things out of context.
Anyhow, yea, a Squier will last past my "until" (see above, search ebay for further proof)

Cute. I guess not reading the title at all doesn't count for reading comprehension. You didn't read it, so there's nothing to comprehend, right?

I think it's a drummer's term. A metal cymbal thingy they place behind them, activated by hot air.

Wonder if the op is going to revisit, welcome to the Forum Ametrix. "Best Electric Guitar For Beginners?" is going to be determined after you choose a guitar and how you get along with the instrument. I think that you will like a Fender product but I have known many guitarists who feel that way about Gibson products too. Have fun shopping and let us know what you do decide.

Well, disregarding the controversy over asinus millinery, and to get back to the OP's OP, the following questions need to be asked:

What is your budget?
My idea of reasonable May or May not coincide with yours...

Who are your guitar heroes?
While this is somewhat silly, if you just absolutely adore the music and playing of a particular artist, you might be happier getting in the general ballpark with a similar guitar...no, playing a Strat won't make you sound like Eric Clapton, but it will just get you "closer" to your hero.

Lastly, how much are you planning on spending on an amp?
The most fantabulous instrument hand-crafted by Tibetian virgin monks in Xanadu will not sound good without a decent amplifier. I would rather go with a cheap (but playable) guitar and a more expensive amp than vice versa.
