Do they ever have a general sale other than closeouts etc.? I'll be buying an amp soon. If I buy new, it will be from Sweetwater to save the sales tax. If they had any kind of sale, it would sway me to buy new rather than used. I've been watching but it seems like they just discount specific items, rather than like GC where you can occasionally get 12 - 15% off anything over a certain price. I just wondered if anyone knew.

My experience with Sweetwater has been 100% positive (with apologies to ZZDoc, who apparently got hosed by them). They don't make a big deal out of advertising it, but if you ask for a discount on a big-ticket item they will almost always offer something, especially if you let it be known that you can get it discounted somewhere else. And as others have noted, if you actually ring them up instead of placing the order through their website they will usually include "excluded manufacturers" in any discount promotion they happen to be running. Just make sure that you understand what the terms are: whether or not the item can be returned for a refund without a restocking fee, and what the return window is. If they shipped the item for free, you will almost always have to pay to ship it back to them.

As an aside to residents of the U.S. who live in states which don't collect sales tax on internet purchases, I suggest you enjoy this privilege while you can because a national internet sales tax is coming down the pike, sooner rather than later! I have never seen a modern lawmaker of any political stripe who could resist for long when it came to grabbing potential tax dollars...

+1 Agree with modwiz. All of the other e-tailer's 15% off sales rarely include Fender gear. If you call a Sweetwater 'sales engineer' and ask, you can get a sweeter Sweetwater deal.

I have good experiences from Sweetwater, except for a few things:

  • Every time I have asked whether they could price match GC for something, they have said no.
  • When ordering something that was backordered along with something in stock, I explicitly asked to wait and ship the entire order together. The sales representative said "of course we'll send the item when it arrives", then split the order, and gave me two different invoices. Mail in rebates did not get honored since not on the same invoice.
  • Speaking of splitting invoices, whoever packages is careless and twice so far has torn the invoice.
  • There are a lot of items and brands they just don't carry. I'd give it less than 50% chance of them having whatever I want or need.

All in all, I still use them, because they have the best pictures and descriptions of any such site, good customer service (by US standards, unfortunately) and free shipping on most items.

I wish they didn't have dedicated sales reps, though. I hate that with a passion. it's like primary care physicians. You get stuck with someone because it feels rude to ask for someone else. And that someone isn't always available, and you have to wait. Scr*w waiting. If my time is important, give me someone who can communicate now, not later.

Thanks for the replies. I know they're a good company to buy from based on what I've read. I'm not sure if they do general discount promotions like GC or not. I'll probably end up buying a week before they do one!

I just ordered, and received a Fender Am. Std. Fretless Jazz from Sweetwater Sound. I have never received a bass from any another .com that was better packed than from Sweetwater. I rate Sweetwater Sound as the best.

I usualy "try" locally and compare prices with my sales rep
at Sweetwater and they will usually match (and include 2-yr
warranty w/free shipping) or beat competition.

I heart Sweetwater!!!

That's not my experience. Whenever I've asked them whether they could match a price, the answer has been no. So it only wastes a day waiting for an answer.
I still like them for their web site and reviews.

My Sweetwater Rep wasn't avalible when I called in my order. It went to a sales desk, or another Rep. It worked out ok. I got the my bass, and the bag of candy too. Image

I found a pedal for 15 dollars less on Amazon, and Sweetwater met the price for me. I am a fairly regular customer though and went through my rep.

Like Modwiz, I work with a sales rep that is very
good at Sweetwater. I have no complaints at all in
my dealings with them.

I won't go anywhere else BUT Sweetwater,...I am fortunate that I am within a 35 minute drive from the store. I take lessons at the Sweetwater Academy of Music.
They have ALL my business! Top notch outfit.
