Hi guys.

I've been a longtime Gibson player (and guitars that of that variety), but lately I've been enjoying the hell of out my Fender guitars. They have quirks just like any other model, but they're dialed in quite nicely. Here's a photo of some of my collection:

I've had MIA Strats in the past. I really like that black one (It's a MiM I bought used off of CL for 85 dollars)....but right now that Tele is really talking to me. Anyway, I'm sort of here to get some questions answered and expand what limited knowledge I have....

Thanks for keeping this place going!

Welcome to the forum. Nice collection. Certainly doesn't look like an $85 guitar.
I thought I'd help you out and let you know your negative got reversed somehow.

I don't I've ever heard that before!

I was going to say...that Tele...it's really working for me. But I think it's working for me because...well...it doesn't exactly sound like a twangy Telecaster. I'm chalking it up to the 6 saddle bridge and alder body. I play rock...so it has been a real good guitar as a segueway between something Gibsonish and the Strat and another Tele I own that has the 3 saddle bridge and is uber twangy.

Thanks. There's a story behind that.

I don't know what it was...but I happened upon CL while I was on break and I saw "Fender Strat for sale 85 dollars". I couldn't believe it. I thought it might have been a fake or some junkie who was trying to sell off stuff. But, it wasn't. I called the number and it was a nice lady who told me she bought it for her son a while back (it's a 2005) and he never took to it. So, I went and picked it up. It came with a gig bag, cable, and a tuner as well. It also had the sticker and factory strings on it. (Here's a photo of when I got it home.)

It did need a proper setup. After I all but blocked off the bridge (I added a couple of springs from my parts drawer) adjusted the truss rod and replaced the saddles, the guitar set up quite nicely. All of the strings are set just a hair over 4/64" with the Low E at 5/64". No fret buzz. I also added the black pickguard and h/w. It really is a great player, and I haven't felt any desire or need to upgrade to anything beyond. And...I figure if Karma is going to throw me a Strat at that price, I had probably best start playing one out regularly!

Nice collection!

That SG of yours looks interesting. I didn't know they made them with 23 frets, or that the older ones were thicker. I guess I learn something new every day! Are those '59 pickups or PAFs?

The SG is a 2002. I bought it used for 800 dollars. It only has 22 frets. (Camera trick). It's pretty much stock. The only thing I did to it was replace the pots with CTS 500 audios wound for a lefty and Vitamin Q capacitors. I've resisted the urge to do any sort of major component changes ala pickups (Another thread, more lessons learned the hard way). It still has the 490/498 set in there which is fine for a rock growl.

The neck profile is also very large on that guitar. It's pretty close to a '59. I can't complain though. It's good for bends and it doesn't fall out of tune as the rumor goes with SG's as a whole.

That's a set I can work with. You need a 335 in there

Welcome to the Forum G_Strange,it's good to see a one time total Gibson player realize how great Fender guitars are too.I have seen too many guys on the Gibson Forum who absolutely refuse to play Fenders and dismiss them as being inferior and truth be known, most of them probably never played one.Guitar snobbery is a definite clue that that person doesn't have a clue himself.Sorry for the mini-rant.

Anyway you have what many guitarists consider the must-have guitars that a guitarist should have in his/her guitarsenal and that's a Tele,Strat,S.G. and L.P. Of course many would add a Gretsch and a Casino or Gibson 330 to round out the group.Glad to have you aboard and I hope that you can stick around and share some more pix of your toys etc..There are many folks here with an encyclopedic knowledge of just about everything pertaining to guitars, and not only Fender,we also have some bona fide amp gurus and quite skillful techs and luthiers.I'm sure that you'll find something of interest to you every day-Cheers.

Nah, if I were to add to those solidbody classics, it would have to be a Flying V.

If adding semis, there are a lot to choose from, but I'd probably go for a Rickenbacker 330.
