Forgive me I know this is well above what you indicated you were willing to pay but this is a very nice solid wood Acoustic Electric:

I've played a couple of them and liked them quite a bit.

Why not recommend a Fender ACS Newporter while at it?

Price obviously is a concern here. Something like this probably is more in line with what he needs.

Forums are for posing questions that attract wildly varied, biased answers. Everyone knows this. No need for noses going out of joint.

Peace, brothers.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

For slightly more you can have electronics in it.

It may be a little hard to stay away from laminates in your price range. There's always a tradeoff.
I went acoustic shopping a couple years ago for an Epiphone Masterbuilt and came home with a Martin Performing Artist Series guitar. Just a way better playing and sounding instrument and made in Nazareth Pa. Don't shy away from laminates. Martin X Series guitars are surprisingly well made guitars made in Mexico and everything but the top is composite material HPL body and Richlite neck and bridge. A bit out of your price range, but nicer sounding and better built than many others in their price range.

Hey supro, I know what you're saying about those Martin X series, it felt like everything else I tried was being played behind closed doors, still to drop any cash yet though, just wondered if there was a secondary wow factor playing an all wood Martin, I should have tried one of them at the time but the price tag was blinding me, I was only going at most three figures, plus the two sales reps were tag teaming me to part with the cash which just brought the shutters down......thanks

The Martin I have is a Performing Artist OMCPA4 which is a lower end Orchestra model in the series but made in Nazereth Pennsylvania. The top, body and neck are all tone woods. The top being Sitka Spruce, back and sides are Sapele and the neck is Mahogany. The fingerboard and bridge are a material called Black Richlite which is paper pulp and resin. The fingerboard to me anyway, feels like Ebony. It doesn't feel like plastic, it isn't sticky or slippery. No real fancy bling and it has a smaller body than a Dreadnaught, but it cuts an acoustic mix just fine.
It has middle of the road Fishman electronics that sound amazing.

As far as the wow factor, yeah there is. You can just feel the notes especially the bottom end through the body. The notes sustain what seems forever and the top end just shimmers. it's not a D28 but it was half the price. This guitar beat out Taylor which was really a nice playing guitar but too bright for my taste, Epiphone Masterbuilt, that thing was horrible and that's what I originally went in for too, Takamine, Ibanez, Fender and Grestch. The Guild I tried was beautiful but I couldn't bond with the neck. I also tried Parkwood, Breedlove and Seagull. The Martin still followed me home.

The bottom line is, if it sounds good to you, plays well and looks like a quality instrument, you shouldn't worry about what it's made out of. Just because a guitar is "solid wood" doesn't mean it's quality tone wood. I live less than an hour from the Martin Guitar factory and one tour will seriously educate you. It's also about the bracing and design of the instrument. I have an old Ibanez copy of a D28 with a spruce top and rosewood back and sides that can't come anywhere my Martin in tone and playability.

If you're tight on cash some of my favorites are Breedlove, Martin X Series, Seagull or Recording King, and now PRS has some $600 range guitars. but for under that you're probably looking at laminates. Don't worry about the bling factor or how shiny the guitars finish is. Worry more about the tone and playability and you'll be fine.

Cheers for that Supro, yeah it seems to me that some of those I tried were possibly built by furniture makers rather than Guitar makers, also still got that Epi Sheraton that got me on looks ( the swine) to trade
