Hey Gang,
Looking for some opinions...
Do you leave your guitars in open tunings or tune them back to standard?

I have my '57 Les Paul Jr optimized and tuned for slide work (key of G) and I'll periodically use a drop-D tuning on other guitars as the song warrants. Beyond that, all of my instruments are tuned to standard pitch.

I gave up on weird tunings many years ago. Takes too long to change tuning on stage or it ties up a spare guitar, easier to just play slide in standard tuning and figure out a different way to play any weird-tuned stuff. The most I'll ever do is drop the low E down to a D.

And don't get me started on people who insist on tuning a semitone down.

I've got several guitars , one of the reasons is so I can leave a few in various tunings and I usually leave a bunch of them in an open tuning. This way they are ready to use with a minimum of dicking around.

Right now I've got a Telecaster in open G , an Epiphone Special II in open D , a twelve string acoustic in open D , a parlor acoustic in open D , a Dean resonator in open E , another Dean resonator in open D , a Republic resonator in open G . Everything else is tuned in standard.

Having said that , if there were only one or two guitars laying around , I'd have to mess with changing them to the tuning I'd like.

If I was to start doing live stuff I'd likely bring a couple of guitars and use one of them for open tunings , it's not difficult to go from open G to D or back .

I keep my National resonator in open G for convenience.
Also, it puts a lot less strain on it's old neck.

Thanks for the quick response, so no adverse effects on the neck by keeping then in open g or e lfor long periods of time?

I play all my guitars in all different kinds of tunings--open G, open D, (and minors of those tunings) dropped D, double dropped D, something I developed that has a few sympathetic strings (I call it "South Side China")...no lasting harm to any of them.

As far as leaving one in open G, that definitely won't hurt the neck--it's a slack tuning so there's less tension on the neck.

The only thing that might mess up is if you try to do this with a guitar that has a floating tremolo--the slack tuning might make the trem pull up (up from the body) and make the action untenable.

I set my Les Paul copy up for open G and leave it that way.

I got tired of tuning & retuning, so I didn't play open tunings as much

once I dedicated one of my guitars to open G, I started using it more often.

Nice to see someone else on here sporting the Special II. I dig mine. Bought it for $50 in perfect condition. Put some Yamaha 18/1 tuners, Tone Pros bridge, CTS Pots, Duncan '59s, Orange Drop cap. The Basswood body really brings it all to life. Lightweight simple designed LP. It's seriously one of my favorites.

I usually keep one guitar and one bass in Eb (half step down) tuning but I almost never use open tunings. Drop D (and on rare occasions double drop D) are about as far from standard as I go these days. I used to play around with DADF#AD on the acoustic (Bruce Cockburn) but it's too bothersome to tune back.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

No one mentioned intonation changes with different tunings. :?:
