New amp idea (and I'll give this one to Fender at no cost...unless they just insist on giving me one of the first amps in this model)

Why not a Pawn Shop Bass Amp?
Something that can ably handle the lower frequencies of an electric bass, and can be used for bedroom/backstage jams, low-volume rehearsals, home recording or a "new player" first bass amp...there's plenty of guitarists (such as myself ) who own a bass/dabble in bass playing who would buy such an amp just to have on hand for those excursions.

Something between a Bassman Ten Amp, a Musicmaster Bass Amp and some other obscure under-powered bass tube amp...

...and like many other under-powered bass tube amps, it would end up being a hit with guitarists and harp players.

What do y'all think?

There's a problem with making a cheap small tube amp for bass. The low frequency response is very much governed by the size and quality of the output transformer. To get really good bass and to work reliably you need a huge and very well-built transformer. That pretty much restricts tube bass amps to people who can afford things like an Ampeg SVT (and the army of road crew required to carry it about).

Having said that, a small bass amp with a tube preamp and a solid state output stage would be a winner.

So, here I go sounding like a complete novice, and really wanting to get one of the Squier Bass VI, well, would I have to buy a bass amp to play this through?
Thanks in advance guys.

EDIT: Sorry to hijack the thread a bit....

True, if you're referring to an actual on-stage-performance-ready bass amp, but the examples I mentioned above (Bassman Ten, Musicmaster Bass Amp) aren't necessarily great bass amps or stage-worthy; I'm talking about a cool, funky bedroom bass amp.

Honestly, none of the Fender Pawn Shop Amps thus far are stage-ready, unless you mic them...I'm talking about extending that concept to a small bass amp.

That's a very do-able idea...

What's the point in buying an amp that isn't loud enough for full band rehearsal, but too powerful for personal practice? You'd be spending money on watts you wouldn't be able to use, or need. If that's what you mean when you say "underpowered", then my response is, there's enough bass amps out there already.

Maybe I'm not being clear;

I'm referring to something along the lines of a Champ, Princeton or Deluxe Reverb with components (speakers that won't blow, stronger transformer, etc.) that can handle bass frequencies...a small, tube-powered bass amp.

I never said "too powerful for personal practice"... I specifically said one powerful enough for personal practice or a low-volume jam/rehearsal.

...and by saying "underpowered", I perhaps used the wrong adjective...perhaps "low-powered" would be a better description.

Look, the Pawn Shop guitar amps are (most likely) not going to be used much for live performances, unless they're mic'd...they might be used at a super-low-key/low-volume/tiny venue (electric) coffeehouse gig--a solo gig the likes of Lincoln Durham, Guthrie Kinnaird, and that ilk.

I'm just suggesting a small, low-wattage (for bass) bedroom amp for the bass guitar.

Sounds to me like you want Fender to re-invent the '66 small-box Bassman......

Thank you, Arjay!

I knew there had to be some kind of amp they made along these lines in the past...do you have a pic (or better yet, do you have one of those amps)?

It's the type of amp that Brian Setzer plays, only in blackface guise.

I could use an all-instrument practice amp.

Yep, just like the '59 Bassman became better known (and used) as a guitar and harp amp, the mid-60's piggyback Bassman amps and the early-70's Bassman Ten did the same, I want a reasonably priced (ie, Pawn Shop series) run-anything-you-want-through-it amp...something that can handle bass frequencies without harm...
