SM58 is dynamic. People using condenser mics would need a phantom power pack with the Passport Mini. Phantom packs start at about $20 street price. Most people buying a $149 7 watt PA amp/recording interface probably own Dynamics. There are actually some good sounding affordable condensers out there. The Nady SPC-15 for example. I usually shun Nady mics but honestly for the money the SPC-15 are usable but most stores don't carry them while they do carry Shure pro line SM and budget line PG dynamics. While there are some condensers specifically designed for stage use, condensers are mostly considered studio mics. Condensers are super sensitive meaning they pick up all kinds of things you don't want picked up including tummy rumbles or mom slamming the dryer door. Unless you are in a sound proof studio you are probably better off with a dynamic.

Look at a Fender Passport MINI. It's a 7 watt PA that runs on AC or batteries, has USB interface capability for recording and has useful built in effects. Lists about $200 and street is about $150. Probably worth a look if you are looking for an entry level low power PA that you can also use as a recording tool or to busk with.

It doesn't look like the Fender provides phantom power, though?

Won't need phantom power for 58 or any dynamic mic.

(Christmas came around Feb 2013 for me. The local charity shop had 2 mics, 1 a "Disney" karaoke pink plastic thing for £5 and a Shure SM58 for £3. Guess which one I bought ;) )

BTW, Riley--I don't know if this is what you're going for, but the first part of that tune was reminiscent of some early Black Sabbath...I mean that as a compliment, too.

I was going to say that too! I almost expected Ozzy to start singing!
What about a used keyboard amp?
