So I finally got round to buying a mandolin today. Its all laminate woods, but I didn't notice that much difference in projection compared to the solid topped ones I tried, and it has a strat pickup too, which is neat. Not bad for 90 quids.

I'm not crazy about all these acoustic instruments being made out of laminate material. You just can't beat the tone of real wood.

Got a FM-101 a couple weeks ago and am pleasantly surprised on how good it really is for the price. Sure, it's no studio instrument, but for its purpose it's a bargain. Never tried the mando before, but has been a lot of fun so far.

We're having a good time. Its pretty disorientating thinking in fifths though. I've got a couple of Irish trad. bits and pieces down and I've pretty much sussed out all of the open chords and a couple of basic scales. Its a good mental work-out.

Cool, I like that it has a pickup--a distorted mandolin sound quite cool.

But however you play it--enjoy...

After having the FM-101 mandolin for a while, decided to give it some of the care my other mandolins have gotten.

The FM-101 can be made to sound and play a lot better with just a little work. Did some basic set-up work (checked fret-to-string distance, filed down the nut slots just a smidgen, and lowered the bridge a lot to adjust, verified intonation) and that helped. Changed the strings to GLS-250 lights which really helped a lot. The instrument now sounds better and plays easier.

In my often hot/humid climate the laminate FM-101 gets much more "outside" time than my other mandolins - it's just tougher where the weather's concerned. Next trick I'm going to try will be to hook a piezo pickup to it and connect it to a small (10W) amp.
