I think a lot people will agree that the quality of the MIM stuff is a lot better now than it used to be.

Tex Mex pickups are the best bang for the buck IMHO and to quote my favorite Martian YMMV. I have installed those and they make a 40 dollar Squire Bullet Stratocaster sound like a Clapton, Gilmore, Vaughan or any other with a tubescreamer through a Vibrolux. Change the electronics use vintage everything and those pickups will work each and everytime you play. :D 8)

Actually Fender does tweak it's pickups from time to time during the course of the years they are available. They will tend to sound better as the time goes on. I have a 2 sets of the Tex-Mex pickups. 2004 and 2006 vintage, they sound different in the same guitar.

They do like a lower setting than Fender specs by about a full screw turn or so, then they mellow out and get "Texas Bluesy".

Seems there is no comparison in the lively spunky tone of the 2013 tex mex pick ups vs the 2002s
Changing strings to brighten up the 2002
