Anyone ever try picks made from wood, bone, or anything like that?

I'm not into wood picks so much, but I do have some antler picks I like.

And I have some stone ones I really like.

I tried using a thumb pick, since I generally play finger style, but it still seems awkward to me. I find using regular picks uncomfortable, especially on bass, but it's probably because I never used one starting out. I kind of wish I did. I'm wondering if one of those wood ones would be ideal, since they seem to have that indentation in the center.

The last few weeks I've been experimenting with 'picking' without a pick. It's amazing the dynamics I'm able to get by doing this. I definitely can't play as fast this way but the variety of tones and dynamics might make it worth it. With down strokes of my index finger I can do pinch harmonics simply by picking the string at the 1st harmonic.

While you can't do down/up/down/up as quickly without a pick, you certainly gain speed by being able to use more fingers at the same time. These guys did quite well without a pick: :D

I generally fingerpick--just flesh and fingernails (mostly flesh since I don't grow my fingernails out like some guys do).

On the rare occasions I use a pick (usually a song on which I'm only playing a "strummy" rhythm), I use those white teardrop-shaped Clayton 1.52mm picks with the eagle on them or very heavy Dunlop Jazz III's...but I don't do that very often.

I had some "regular-size" picks with the Screamin' Armadillos logo printed on them to give out at gigs, as promo stuff, etc., but after so many years of using just my fingertips or those teardrop-shaped ones, it just didn't work very well.
