I have always used the classic Fender 351 celluloid picks while playing my electric guitars and flat picking my acoustic. I use Dunlop nylon picks exclusively for strumming my twelve string.
My go-to guitar is a Telecaster but I also have a Stratocaster that I love playing but have never found quite as satisfying. It is either too harsh/bright or too dull. I've tried adjusting the tone/volume controls on the guitar and the eq on my preamp and my amp.
Nothing has been as immediately satisfying as just now, being too lazy to stand up and find a 351, just playing it with a Dunlop nylon that was within reach. Yee-haw! I feel like I've found a missing puzzle piece. Although it feels a bit finicky to have a preference as to which pick goes with which guitar I can't believe the difference it makes.

I'm still trying to narrow down my choice of pick.

I have the Dunlop Tortex (too stiff), JazzII (too dull) and several gauges of Dunlop Nylons.

I think I'm leaning toward the Dunlop Nylons in .88 ga. The thinner ones seem to make too much pick noise and the thicker ones seem to slow down my alternate picking.

But, this is probably one of those questions which is so individualistic, I expect you'll get a different answer from everyone responding.

The answer... ???

Spend $10-$20 and try as many different kinds and gauges as you can, then decide.

cheers!

Only use them occasionally now, although everyone still buys me picks as presents lol! When I use them though it's these: Image Fender 098-0351-980 Classic Celluloid Heavy White Guitar Pick.

I tend to use the Dunlop Tortex .5's

Although I've been using my fingers more and more, even on electric.

I've found the Dunlop Tortex .73 and acceptable substitute for the 351's.
The upside to auditioning dozens of different picks is that there will always be at least one pick within reach anywhere in my house even if it isn't ideal.

Going pick-less would be ideal. I just never liked giving up the attack a pick can give.

I was using fender medium, purple moto, but recently got white moto fender thin picks which are real easy to find when misplaced. :D Too bad they don't seem to make a medium-thin. That might work well for me.

I have been using Dunlop Tortex .88 for 20 years or more...they seem to work just fine.

Fender picks are great and I used them alot until Chet turned me on to V-picks then a year later Gary turned me on to Star Picks. I use the yellow Star Pick for bass guitar and the orange Star Plck for guitar.

Same here, my inside of my right thumb and finger ends are like plastic, so I've not been using the pics so much lately.

I like using a variety of picks, but I prefer thick picks.

My go to picks are Tortex 1.14 mm, but I also use Gator Grips& Wedgies in the same thickness, as well as heavy Dunlop nylon picks (Glow in the dark ones), and a few stone picks, antler picks & double picks, as well as an assortment of other picks.

Whenever I'm in a guitar store I look at the picks, and if they have anything a little different I usually pick them up (Except for the real expensive ones)

Funny, when using a pick, I miss the attack that pickless can give. My hand can only move so fast, but when I flick my fingers at the same time as the wrist, the nails hit the strings much faster than a pick ever can.
Never mind being able to hit multiple strings at the same time at that speed.

The main downside is the build-up of bruises and calluses under the nails. And a certain amount of pain, of course.

But right now, I'm probably 90% nails, 10% pick. I use a silver pick sometimes for the sound.
