Don't know if there are any fans of The Clash on here, but I took these shots at an exhibition in London's Soho recently. Basically a massive CD box set came out, so the powers that be made this pop up shop type exhibit with loads of Clash memorabilia on display including a couple of Joe Strummer's Telecasters, and 2 of Paul Simonon's basses - one that was busted on the front the 'London Calling' LP. Anyway hope you like the pics. :)

Haha, those pics pretty much sum up the attitude of the times. Takes me back to my teenage punk years, thanks for posting!

That P-bass is going to need the attentions of a panel beater though.

Very cool indeed, wish I had caught that. I remember the day Joe died, my dad shed a few tears as he loved them.

In fact the reason I'm called Joe is his love for Joe Strummer. My middle name is Jesse, after Bob Dylans son. There you go!

I just heard of that thing and travelled over 100 miles to go and see it. I understand your dad being upset about Joe's death, his songs really spoke to my generation.
Quite something being named after a rock 'n' roll legend though, aye Joe? 8)

Thanks for posting. Joe was a very underestimated performer and humanitarian.

I'm guessing that the broken Bass is the one from the famous photo.

Goodonya ...Mark.

His later song writing certainly showed a lot of the humility in his character. As a performer he gave it his all right to the last. I saw The Clash in June 1980, and then later saw Joe and the Mescaleros supporting The Who - both excellent performances in both cases.
The bass is 'THE' bass, which was a real thrill to see up close considering it's on the cover of my favourite Clash LP. There was a lot of other stuff I snapped that day, but I thought would just put up the Fender stuff here, although if anyone wants I can add other shots, such as Mick Jones' Gibson MM etc. Glad you liked the shots Mark. ;)

The Clash were great! I'm not too fond of the post-London Calling stuff, though - too much record company, not enough honest F.U. But at least they didn't sell out as quickly and completely as U2 and Ramones.
Nice pictures!

I also like Finnish Punk, like Turun Tauti. I can't understand a word they say, but the conviction with with they say it is righteous. The language seems made for Punk, much like German seems made for Heavy Metal, and Norwegian for Death Metal.

The Clash - photograph by the brilliant Pennie Smith
Taken at the New York Palladium, september 21st, 1979. "I remember thinking something was wrong, realising Paul was going to crack - and waited. The shot is out of focus because I ducked - he was closer than it looks" Pennie Smith.

The first shot she took was the one below. It doesn't feel like it was contrived as most bands doing it, probably because it was the only guitar trashed by any of the members of the band.
That in itself makes it seem more spontaneous, although I'm not a fan of any guitar getting totalled for any reason - kick a mic stand over, or something imo. Anyway Pennie Smith's first shot:

LOL! Yeah, I'm with you on that language comparison thing. It's not so far out if you think about it.
I think they had a pretty poor album after London Calling - Sandinista could have been a very strong single album imo, as I always find myself skipping tracks for good ones. Combat Rock is a much stronger album imo.
I think also The Clash always had an agenda, but it became milky and I think people were just listening to other stuff by time the mid 80s came along. Joe's later band The Mescaleros were probably the route The Clash should have gone...

Cool pics. Always liked Mick's Les Pauls, the sunburst from 'Rude Boy,' the black Custom from the same film/outdoor concert, and the white Custom when I saw them on the Combat Rock tour.

That white custom LP is a beauty, and I don't really like LP's.
