You could get some advice from a firm that handles smoke and flood damage, they've seen it all, or a firm that cleans up after crime scenes, they've seen it all too.

A dog that peed on my guitar just wouldn't work for me. Now maybe if I had one that $@!& gold, I would keep it. Just said this all in fun. Happy New Year!

Part and parcel of having a dog I'm afraid. Never give the pooch the chance, and put your guitars in a case. I've got 2 dogs, and trust me peeing is only part of the dangers.

Two dogs here too - much larger than a maltese, though. I leave the guitars out, and that isn't a problem. Sometimes one of them barks and scares herself when an acoustic guitar resonates. Or strikes an Em7add11 with her tail in passing.
The biggest problem is dog hair. I recommend covering tube amps if you have furry/feathery pets, and use canned air frequently.

But at least no one will break in and steal my instruments.

I've only got 2 White West Highland Terriers, but I'm with you on covering up of amps - their fur gets everywhere lol!

That's a good enough reason for having them right there!

A good pistol requires no vaccinations, doesn't need to be fed, creates no post-excreta clean-up chores, and won't bite the postman.

Have to agree with Rule #1. Image My Am. Std. Basses are in their little happy caves away from my two tail-waggers, when not being played. I'm glad however your Strat is OK. Image

It also doesn't work when you're not at home, which is when you're most likely to get burgled.

And honestly, it's nice to have an alert system for when UPS/Fedex/USPS leaves packages (or tries to sneak up to leave a "tried delivering, no one home" sticker on the door, lazy bastards).
