I am lucky to play in church I play in. Our church music is many styles of music. One of my favorites is a song called " My Glorious" by a band named "Delirious" check the song on YouTube. Also a lot of songs by "Lincoln Brewster". both ROCK!! !

When I started learning how to play guitar, I was asked to be part of my local youth groups' praiseband. Those guys became some of my best friends, and our favorite song to play was "You are Good" by Lincoln Brewster.

I was such a bad guitarist then too! I wish I could go back with what I know now and do it all over again with those guys.

Two things:
(1) Many times, we think we are "not audible" when the audience can hear us just fine. If there are no monitors, try tilting your amp back on it's tilt legs (if it has them) or placing your amp on a chair, so the sound is traveling toward your ears instead of your ankles.

(2) Far be it from me to criticize another person's belief, mode of worship or religion, (I'm a member of a very unique Christian organization that runs contrary to many other groups, so I have learned to be tolerant of of others whose beliefs I don't agree with) but I think we can all agree that 99% of religions advocate humbling oneself to the wishes of another, if those wishes don't break any of God's laws.

If they ask you to keep it down, you should do so. If you truly can't hear yourself, and that creates so much turmoil in your heart/mind/soul, then you need to quit the band and just attend services as an audience member.

...because at that point, you're more concerned with being heard than praising God.

Call me old fashioned but in church I prefer just an organ and choir, modern pop Christian music is quite terrible IMHO.

Yes, modern church music can be a bit too much:

Call me old-fashioned too. I agree.

However, I am happy people are able to be in bands. I was an altar boy, in another life, we had an organist and a small choir. We also had a separate building for events. We had a few Friday night rock parties there but, they were not ecclesiastical affairs.

SO, I support the idea of bands being organized and given a venue for performance by whatever agency.

I do believe there is a time and a place for everything. I also realize their are nuances to sub-cultures.

Bring on the musical joy.

+1,0000,...I do agree, but there is still nothing wrong with guitar in church,...electric or acoustic! Where I go,...our service is mostly traditional,...piano,organ,and congregation singing the old gospel hymns. Once in a while our retired associate pastor will come and play some old southern gospel tunes on guitar. He does both electric and acoustic and the volume is just right,...not too loud where it runs us out of the sanctuary or not too soft where we can't hear him. I LOVE to hear the old hymns of the faith on guitar. Okay,...having said all that, the original poster needs to understand it's not about him or being heard,...it's about praising the Lord with music and work with the band. I can't picture hearing "Amazing Grace" at blistering, distorted guitar amp volumes,...just wouldn't sound right!

Couldn't agree more. I have a neighbor who Jedi Mind Tricked us into going to their "Megachurch" one sunday. I had never experienced that but they had a stage with Trusses and Par Cans, two guitarists each with floor units and some really nice guitars, a keyboard player with enough gear to make Rick Wakeman take a second look, and a huge shiny drum kit. Not to mention amazing HD projection. To each his own i guess and I LOVE it loud and/or heavy just as much as the next guy, but that place just felt weird to me. Then the collection bucket came around and I was thinking... "Is this for the Band?" Its a free country but i can at least say it all confirmed my suspicions that my neighbors are a little cooky. The small church down the street has a modest thing occasionally where the Pastor plays an acoustic and sometimes is accompanied by one of the young members on a small kit and an organist. Seems more earnest to me at least.

FWIW, I use a Mustang I in my church, seriously, a mustang I. I put MI on an amp stand and point it at me and use it as a monitor. A Sennheiser e609 hangs over the top of the amp directly in front of the speaker. The mic cable runs through the amp handle so no need for a mic stand. I have no problem hearing myself and some folks in the band complain that they can't hear me. They congregation never has a problem hearing me.

e609 roughly $100
amp stand roughly $45 (optional)
mic cable roughly $25 (church might provide this)

You can find the e609 used for even less.

I'd think a guy could learn a whole lot about jamming, while in a church. Stick with it, and take full advantage of the resources. Maybe even give the sheet music a go. Repetition is key, right?

+1

It has improved my listening ability more than anything. I've also gotten fairly decent at improvising on the major scale - something I never did with blues/rock bands.

I play on a worship team and we play contemporary, we seldom play the old hymns, and if we do they have been "modernized". Our team consists of acoustic guitar, keys, bass, electronic drums, me on electric guitar, and four awesome singers. Most of us have played at least "semi-pro", so we know pretty much how to get a good mix and still control stage volume.

The musicians all have Avioms to get their individual monitor mix whether it be through a floor wedge or in ear monitors. The singers share an Aviom mix and the leader has his own Aviom mix. I use the in ears because the bass player next to me runs his monitor way too loud for my taste.

I run my amp miced in a back room to keep stage volume down. I get my mix on stage and trust the sound tech to do his job in the house mix. It's church not a rock concert. Sometimes you gotta check your ego at the door and remember why you are there.

My only issue I have is with the bass player running his monitor too loud, he says he needs to "feel" the music, problem is, he caused me some permanent hearing damage in the process.

A few things you can do:

1. Place the amp on a chair and tilted so you can hear it better.

2. Play parts that compliment the music, but is different than what everyone else is playing.

I've been a guitar player in a few church bands and learned that I need to play other parts that fit, but are different. I'll do this by playing the chords using a different octive, or a different not pattern. Remember a chord is made up of triads (3 notes) and the order you hit those notes will change the voicing of that chord.

3. You can play at a different place in the song.

Check out this video. You might find it helpful.
