im building a strat which has humbuckers and les paul controls.

im looking at buying a pre-made wiring harness because I havnt soldered for a long, long time and don't fancy it to be honest. but as the harness wont be in a 'proper' les paul, I wanted to see if the controls pre-drilled in my strat body are in a roughly similar place, as I don't know how much 'give' ill get from the pre-soldered harness.

heres a very un-impressive diagram of how my strat controls are drilled.

any help appreciated, I don't have a les paul to compare to.

sorry don't know why the pic is that way up, that's not how it is in my photobucket

I can't really offer any answers to your question, but if it does not work out getting some extra wire and soldering it yourself is very easy, you may want to look into brushing up on your soldering, It is a very valuable thing to know how to do as an electric guitar player, What I mean is it takes only a few seconds to make a solder connection and if you payed somebody else to solder for you you would be getting ripped off, like if you wanted a new set of pickups at some point a shop would charge you 45$ or more to install them. when it only takes a couple minutes to install them, but who knows you might get lucky and the harness might work out perfectly, but you really should brush up on soldering, it is super easy and a valuable skill

Hi moochy: I'm at the opposite end of the country from my Les Paul at this moment, so I can't check the exact spacing for you. However, I have a strong feeling that if you were to try and graft the layout of an LP wiring harness onto a Strat you'd find the pots crashing into the wood of the control cavity.

On the plus side, on a ready-made LP harness there is some give in the hook-up wire, so you could probably shove things about to squeeze it in - though that might result in the knobs being uncomfortably close together. You may need to choose some smaller knobs - Tele ones, perhaps - to make it work. And you might find replacing standard sized pots with mini-pots helps under the pickguard as well. But then... soldering.

And either way, you also have to find somewhere to put the selector switch.

Not impossible. But tricky.

Personally, if I was determined to do this I'd put the four pots in a line, squeezed closer together than the Strat's usual three. Use mini-pots and maybe smaller knobs, to keep things finger-friendly. And use a three-way Strat selector switch in the usual position.

Of course, all of that means biting the soldering bullet. I've a feeling your up to that, really, Moochy! :)

Cheers - C

Sorry should have mentioned the body is already pre drilled. It is back routed like a les Paul with the little squashed square shaped rear cover plate. The strat body doesn't need a pick guard. It is literally like a les Paul carved into a strat body. The pickup toggle is located next to the controls, in a similar place to a std strat switch.

Sorry about the bad quality, but this is what I got off my traditional. Looks like a bit different

Measured it from the middle of the pot to the other middle.

Cheers for that. I'm quite surprised at how un-symmetrical it is. That lone pot is well out of line with the others. The holes in my paper are where I've actually punched them through with the paper over the body. Very different shape to yours.

Well thats my mistake, it's not out of line at all, it is symmetrical. Sorry, didn't see that

but what i see that while yours leans to the left, mine to the right.

Here's another try. Now I measured the space between the knobs, and it looks like the numbers are different from yours, measured either way.

Moochy, here are the measurements from my '07 Standard LP.
Image

FYI: I ordered a new guitar to be built and I'm having a custom control layout. Below is a photoshop of how the controls will be. This is not the guitar I've ordered, mine will have a Strat body, it's just a simulation of the controls. I wanted the master volume under the bridge pup, like on my Strat, so it could be controlled by my pinky. I'm having two tone controls, each will be a pull/push coil split. Behind the volume will be my 3 way switch. I'm hoping this turns out to my liking.

Thanks for the help guys. There doesn't seem to be too much in it. Though I notice both of you have different measurements from les Paul. Maybe this was a design change, I'm assuming the lp traditional is based on an older design, maybe as time has progressed the controls have been spaced out a bit more?

Mine are center to center on the knobs.
