That is a beautiful guitar. Strange concept, but that builder pulls it off well. I would be happy to play this guitar.

If it's neither a hollowbody nor chambered, what purpose does the raised pickguard have? Unless anyone can let me know what I'm missing here (please do!), I see that as as meaningful as a rear spoiler on a front wheel drive car or a DVD rewinder.

Umm...It serves the same purpose as the original one on a Les Paul...it is a SCRATCH guard! Those were neither hollow or chambered either! And let's face it, it sure goes with the ascetics of the guitar.

It looks like whoever made the guitar just did it for the look of it. If the guitar is flat, there wouldn't really be a real purpose to raise it. My DeArmond was like that. Flat with a raised pickguard. It was kind of a weird feeling. Like a pick deflector. But it didn't hinder my playing at all. In fact, you'll probably get less broken E-Strings by it.

cheers!

I should have rephrased the question. What purpose does a raised pickguard provided to a solidbody flattop?
The Les Paul has a contoured carved top. The raiser allows a flat pickguard. On flat top solid bodies, there's no tradition for raising a pick guard. It serves no practical purpose.

So just eye candy then? That's okay. I still think it looks silly on a flattop. But then again I've seen an exercise bike with a headlight too.

Strange goings on out there in the guitar building world. I don't think it will ever catch on.

If the guitar appeals to you but the pickguard does not, there are these things called "screwdrivers"...

This Telecaster/LP has a carved top. Thus the raised pickguard.
