Click each of these separately and then click the Images tab. Which can you find more pictures of?

That's who I automatically thought of first when this discussion began.

I hate to be the killjoy, but while the SG is a good guitar, the design is flawed. They are not weighted properly, so prone to 'neck dive'. They also have a problem called headstocky-breaky-offy. The angle of the headstock vs. the neck means a little 'oopsie' can cause a lot of damage (this is true of other Gibson guitars too, not just SG's).

I mentioned this once before on this forum and was 'corrected' by everyone who knows better. Here's a quote from an SG owner on the Gibson forum:

A Gibson forum user wrote:
Regarding breakage: Any guitar that gets knocked over, banged when turning, or dropped is in danger of sustaining a cracked/broken neck/headstock. The headstock angle on Gibson guitars would tend to somewhat increase the possibility of damage when knocked over, banged or dropped.

That pretty much sums it up.

Ouch, that looks painful. :( I've actually had that happen to me once with this acoustic guitar I had. It fell face down and busted the headstock. It was a little 3/4 scale beater I got for free, but it had sweet action and sounded pretty good. I miss that guitar.

i've never had a neck / head snap with my epi's or gibsons over the years , then again i never just lean them against an amp or anything else for that matter , i always have a hercules stand with me (the smaller portable one for rehersals , ) saves any grief :D cheers

+1

In forty-three years of owning and playing Gibsons, it's never happened to me. If the instrument is not securely hanging from its strap across my shoulder then it's carefully positioned on a stand or safely residing in it's case.

For those who treat their guitars in a cavalier fashion, let them reap the fruits of their foolishness. They'll find no sympathy with me.

Here it is again guys, and I've heard this story more than once:

In a Gibson case they will snap sometimes, just with a normal gig to gig transport.

Note, I'm not saying every single SG will have this problem. I'm saying 2 guitars take a bumpy trip to a gig, one's a Fender Strat, the other a Gibson SG. If you told me one of them was broken when it arrived at the gig, I wouldn't have to ask you which one.

It's the 17 degree angle you're showing that's the problem.

Re breakage. All of y'all having a cow need to take bigass Midol. Yes, Gibsons can break. Yes, a little easier than Fenders.

BFD.

I've run around like a maniac onstage for years, never had a problem. Honestly, an ounce of prevention's worth a pound of cure. I get pretty damn stupid onstage, and anybody who gets even more stupid, well, stupid is as stupid does.

I prefer Pauls to SGs, but they're great for a little weight relief once in a while. And they vary greatly as to neck dive.
