Oh Yeah? Well here is some more. SG's are fine sounding and playing guitars especially through a Fender Amp!

I like them, especially the bass version of that style (otherwise known as the EB, of course.) I've never had the chance to play an SG guitar, but I did play an EB-3 from the 60's in a music shop a long time ago. Of course, I had to be a cheese-head and play you know what, but sadly it wasn't through a Marshall so it didn't have that same effect. :P Nice bass, though.

Speaking of anyone of those, I'd love to have one of these: Image

Robby Krieger made some of the best music the world has ever known with an SG, I'm thinking of getting one.

This is certainly not the case with my SG -- with 490T/490R humbuckers, it sounds a lot more acoustic than any Strat I've ever owned or even played. Heck, if anything I would say that strats are as far from acoustics as you can get, except from Ibanez RGs. And that's good - it makes the Stratoquacker what it is.

The wide flat neck and shorter scale of the SG is also much more like what you find on an acoustic, and Gibson defaults to smaller frets than Fender does, so it also plays much more like an acoustic than a strat does.

I don't own a regular guitar.

SG's sound kinda dinky to me, when played through a clean channel. Not a lot of tone there. It's a different beast though played through a blazing Marshall. Those humbuckers hide so much of the guitar's sound.

I hate to be the killjoy, but while the SG is a good guitar, the design is flawed. They are not weighted properly, so prone to 'neck dive'. They also have a problem called headstocky-breaky-offy. The angle of the headstock vs. the neck means a little 'oopsie' can cause a lot of damage (this is true of other Gibson guitars too, not just SG's).

I mentioned this once before on this forum and was 'corrected' by everyone who knows better. Here's a quote from an SG owner on the Gibson forum:

A Gibson forum user wrote:
Regarding breakage: Any guitar that gets knocked over, banged when turning, or dropped is in danger of sustaining a cracked/broken neck/headstock. The headstock angle on Gibson guitars would tend to somewhat increase the possibility of damage when knocked over, banged or dropped.

That pretty much sums it up.

The 17 degree neck, head angle has always been a problem. In a Gibson case they will snap sometimes, just with a normal gig to gig transport. The neck itself is strong, usually quarter sawn.

Yep, so don't do that. Very few instruments are made to survive being knocked over, banged or dropped. Why people would treat a guitar with less care than, say, a cello or trumpet, i don't get.
This is as silly as saying that Fender Strats are more prone to being banged up because they're longer. Sure they are, but so? You show caution and care.

How about simply transported from your house to a gig and back?

I promise you I didn't make this up. If you hang out over at the Gibson forum, you will see this same story over and over. But I haven't seen it once on the Fender forum. Does that mean 'Gibson people' are more careless? What about people that have both Gibson's and Fenders ... are they more careless, but only with their Gibsons?
