SG's are extremely "nose-heavy" (as with my 12-string Strat).

It does take some time to acclimate to them.

Arjay

Never played a 12 string Strat Arjay just a acoustics. I find the necks on most SG's that I have played to be very player friendly.

Indeed, they're great necks with easy fretting action. But the location of the strap button on the reverse side of the body at the neck heel combined with the weight of the neck itself poses some unique issues with the instrument's equilibrium. Nothing so serious that can't be eventually overcome though.

"Your opinion on the Gibson SG?"
A great electric guitar with a unique sound. I've played a few and like them. Angus of AC/DC is an amazing SG player and my favorite SG player is in the photo. Listen to Zal's SG work and you can tell how versatile those electric guitars can be.

hi , the sg is a cracking guitar , i,ve owned an epi sg400 (heavily modded) for years , now that was neck heavey till i put a set of klusons onto it , and a few months ago i picked up a special faded gibby , after swapping out the 490 pups for seymour duncan 59's it's a fabulous sounding and playing guitar now . if i'm playing early 70's zappa stuff , cream , and even some sensational alex harvey band 8) nice pic sbls  it the one to pick up and play , the epi hasn't been touched since i got the gibby

as mentioned give one a try , the upper fret access is the best on any guitar and plugged into a marshall tube amp they sound at their best , cheers
Alan

I love my SG. I got one with dual P90's in it. The sounds and playability are great. I don't even notice any neck heaviness.

I would also like to mention: P90's + Fender Tweed amp =

Then again, pretty much any Gibson guitar sounds great through a tweed! Just ask Neil Young.

SG's are great for playing the Power Cords, hard, brash, and loud. Especially The Doors, Cream, Blue Cheer, and some Hendrix.

The SG sounds a lot less acoustic than the Stratocaster.

The EB/SG basses sound awesome, but are painful to play. The lower neck makes my thumb ache, then go numb.

Do you own one?
This is certainly not the case with my SG -- with 490T/490R humbuckers, it sounds a lot more acoustic than any Strat I've ever owned or even played. Heck, if anything I would say that strats are as far from acoustics as you can get, except from Ibanez RGs. And that's good - it makes the Stratoquacker what it is.

The wide flat neck and shorter scale of the SG is also much more like what you find on an acoustic, and Gibson defaults to smaller frets than Fender does, so it also plays much more like an acoustic than a strat does.

Personally, I think the SG is the best electric guitar Gibson has ever made (sorry LP fans). It's a real rock n roll guitar. Angus Young, Tony Iommi, Eric Clapton can't be all wrong.

The newer SG Std. Basses, have more of a serious neck dive from what I remember the early EB Series Basses did. Lighter bodies now I guess, and still a lousy place to set the front strap button too.

Peter Townsend with The Who, sounded great with an SG also.

You guys have some very nice SGs. And I asked this because I may be getting one in a few days, and if I do, I'll post pics on this thread.

If you can put through it's paces and see how it feels. I think you will like it.
