A couple of things ... Stupid me, I did not know Carvin was even still around.

1) Really cool guitar. I love the finish, the thru-the-body neck, the mahogany, the quilted maple with the dark finish, and the coil taps. All great choices.
2) I bought a Carvin "Marshall inspired" head in the mid-80s. They were available only thru mail order, and no one I knew had one. So I went for it sight unseen. Nicely made, great features, and fabulous price ... BUT it had horrible tone. I sent it back and got my money back. It was just like the one in the pic below (as best I remember anyway).
3) Craig Chaquico of Starship (Bay Area boy, I might add) was the heavy endorser for Carvin back in the 80s. There was always a full-page ad of him pimping Carvin in EVERY issue of Guitar Player back then.

Thanks, I feel like I have a really unique guitar that I can call mine for a very long time. The feel and fit and finish are excellent. My other Carvin, a CS4S, is my best sounding guitar that I own, followed closely by my Clapton Strat. Unfortunately, the Holdsworth pup I put in this new one isn't working out very well. It sounds more like a synthesizer than a guitar. Very edgy and harsh. It's not potted, so that may have something to do with it. I'm having new Carvin pups installed in it tomorrow.
As for their amps. I've played their small tube amps many times and I always get great tone from them. I think they call them the Belair and Nomad. I may buy one some day. I think every major manufacturer that has hundreds of product puts out a few award winners and a few stinkers. Not too surprising. Carvin, like Fender is real good about working with you when you feel you got a stinker.

The fact that Carvin is still around is a testament to them obviously doing alot of things right. My one experience with that one Carvin amp was around 30 years ago (did I say 30??? holy crap). And I do not want to infer at all it was bad gear ... it was just not the amp for me. On another note, that guitar of yours looks awesome ... I wish I could play it. Very nice!!

Well, she has a new look. I put in a set of chrome cover Carvin pups that I had from my other Carvin, a CS4. I spent an hour last night at a rehearsal studio playing through the Egnater Renegade that I want to buy. I'm very happy with the sound. More guitar, less synthesizer. I have to decide if I like the chrome covers or if I should ditch the covers and go back to black. What do you guys think?

I think it would look best with a set of zebra pups.

Thanks, I'm in love. We go to band rehearsal tonight, I know I'm not going to be able to sleep when I get home, I'll be all pumped.
I'm preferential to the chrome. I'll keep it that way for a while and get a good comparison between this guitar and my other Carvin with the Bonamassa pups.
Next up, a partscaster Strat that I've had in the back of my brain. I already primed my wife about it last night.

It's a beauty, and I definitely prefer the chrome.

Actually, I was thinking the same thing that DarkPenguin suggested. Although it is likely too late for that. I think the uncovered black humbuckers look better to me than chrome covers. But ... what about a chrome knob for the pup selector switch instead of black plastic? Maybe also add a chrome Rhythm/Treble plate around the switch, too? That would look cool.
