Researching a stamp on my '79 Strat neck that says 'Bent Rod'. Can't seem to find a definitive explanation. Just opinions and guesses.

If Fender found it necessary to produce a stamp for this (I've seen mentioned on other Fender guitars / basses), what was it for exactly?

Many thanks.

G'day Molly. I guess it means the truss rod is bent. I wonder if the neck and stamp are genuine Fender. Surely they don't release Factory seconds onto the market :?

Yup, that stamp is documented "out there," but the exact meaning isn't known.

How bent could a truss rod be? And why would they use it in a new neck? Weird.

Hmmmm..... You'd think this sort of thing would be documented somewhere.

For the record, the neck is straight and neck relief is spot-on. Action's low (too low actually) and the guitar plays well. So, I could just forget about it but that's not good enough.

Need to know....

Cheers.

Yes, I need to know now too.
I assume you did a search for "Bent Rod stamp", all I found were other confused owners of Teles, Strats and Basses with the same stamp.
There's a few wacky theories. Here's mine.
The Bi-flex rods were introduced in the early 80s if I'm not mistaken. Maybe early prototypes were used in the late seventies and stamped "bent rod".
That's all I got.

Geez, people, the rod is meant to be bent.

The stamp is surely for passing a QA test that the truss rod could be bent without the neck splintering or fretboard separating. Seems like a rather obvious test to do.

OK Arth, sounds right. I retract all my previous theories  Geez I'll just go along with Buxom's explanation.

 (read next word in a stentorian British accent) "BRILLIANT!"
$5000 Armadillo Bucks for this statement--no qualifying conditions or disclaimers attached.

Now you just need to find anybody who will accept them as legal tender. :P

Actually, I am curious as to what it (the stamp, not Buxom's joke)...

"Bent Rød" is also a fairly normal Danish name, unless I'm mistaken.

I am leaning toward boxbang's explanation of what "BENT ROD" means.

I don't think it means that anything is broken or that it's a "second" of any type.

My favorite source of Fender Historic Information is http://home.provide.net/~cfh/fender.html
which says that "1980: Fender starts using different truss rod systems, depending on the model."

It doesn't go into any detail about what the different truss rod systems are, but it seems to me that "BENT ROD" is indicating the type of truss rod that the neck has (perhaps it means "the old fashioned kind of truss rod" as opposed to a new bi-flex kind of truss rod, whatever).

So, the bottom line, at least IMO, is that the "BENT ROD" stamp is nothing to worry about.

Makes sense. Thanks. If I get any difinitive word from my further research I'll pass it on.

Oh, thought I'd chuck in a pic of the Strats.
