After owning 9 Fender guitars and 2 Fender amps I can honestly say that they all served me well and then some.In my 40 years of owning Fender products I have only had one issue that involved having to rely on warranty. In 1979 my '78 Strat with an "A" neck started to get a very rare longitudinal twist and became unplayable, before I could arrange to send off the faulty neck,Fender had sent a replacement neck.I was so impressed with this service that I vowed to become a life-long Fender customer and have kept that promise ever since.

I have to agree if I had your experience with Fender, I'd definitely have the same view as you, but sadly I did not. All I ever got was runarounds and excuses. I'm not expecting perfection at $350 (and there was the fact I had to wait 2 months to get it,) but it should be actually able to play. I will say I still love the amps, so it's not all bad and my Tele is nice, too. I just went on to something that suits me better. I'm actually bummed out by it, because aesthetically, Fender has always my favorite design of an instrument. But, I need something that I can play, too.

I have no real complaints. A couple of sharp fret ends which I taped off and fixed with a small file.

That is a great thing about fender, they are so easy to fix. Replace pups, neck or any thing with no problem. I rebuilt my Strat many times. I like it better each time. My Telecaster is a perfect guitar. I have replaced the in put jack holder and strings! I gig with out a back up. Like the guitar is part of me. I have had from 1973 a new guitar and still is like new.

I wouldn't say I'd never buy Fender again, because I still like their amplifiers (they have yet to let me down-lucky I guess :P ) but I won't ever buy a Fender brand guitar or bass again because of my recent experience with them that I've mentioned in the Squier bass forum, and another reason that I didn't mention initially dealing with their customer service over it. It was that attitude that pissed me off about the whole thing (I will admit they later rectified it, but to me the damage was already done) and historically this wasn't the first time it happened.

The first time it was involving a Mexican-made P-Bass in 2005 (piss poor fret job) and of course recently a Squier Bass VI. I know Squier is a budget brand, but it shouldn't have left the factory with a broken neck and unplayable. They tried to blame AMS about this, but that's bullshit since it was brand new, sealed in a box from Fender's factory. It may be Squier, but they still put their name on it. Besides, AMS handled the whole thing excellently and I was refunded. This is one of the reasons I use this company, unlike experiences I've had with others and why I don't buy anything locally.

So now I've switched over to Schecter and purchased a Diamond-J bass (I needed a 21-fret neck) and an Ultra VI (to replace the Squier Bass VI) guitar. I have to say these are the best instruments I've played in 20 years and the quality of them is far superior to anything I've played Fender-related (with probably the exception of Custom Shop, which I've never tried so I can't say) in the past 20 years. They seem to put more care into their instruments, even how they box them. Of course, this is my opinion on how I feel about my instruments and my experiences with them. You may have a different opinion and experience with these and I'm not trying to start a flame war on who is better or not.

The Schecters just feel right to me and they are well suited to me more than the Fender-related guitars have been. It has actually been like night and day with feel and playability, including some American-made Fender basses I've tried. I will say I did get lucky, I suppose with my Squier Custom Telecaster. I feel that still is a nice guitar (for my purposes, anyway) and that's what really started my initial praise for the brand because I was so impressed with it. Now I feel like a jack $@! for doing so, because unfortunately it didn't carry over to anything else I purchased. I guess when your dealing with that price point, it's very hit and miss with quality. Lesson learned, there.

I had a Squier Classic Vibe 60's Precision that quickly developed a twist in the neck, but it didn't make me want to buy a Schecter. Schecter used to build premium Fender copies, now they build goth stuff for Nikki Sixx.

They do have that Nikki Sixx bass, but they actually have more than that. The Diamond-J is essentially a Jazz Bass copy (not Goth or even Metal, like that even matters to begin with.) I find it to be a better instrument suited for me, over what Fender is currently producing. It's what I like, and everyone is entitled to their own opinion, including me. If Fender steps up their game, I might consider their basses and guitars again. I still like their amps.

I can thank Fender for making me get interested in electronics and building my own amps. Emphasis on the plural for Fender shareholders.

Not sure of the date ( 20th century) but, when a GM CEO was asked about the perception that Japanese cars were better made than American ones and how would he respond he said," We're not in the business of making cars, we're in the business of making money". So, if you were buying money, GM was the place, if you wanted a car, Japanese was where the smart money would go. :D

Being a modern corpseration (spelling intended) Fender is serving its shareholders first as its duty. It is all part of the contract. So they are hamstrung and we are bent over getting it without a kiss. Not even a promotional T-shirt.

The circular beauty of it all is we are building the amps that Fender made its name on. Leo went for the cleanest sounds while an amp like the 68' Princeton reissue is set up to break up earlier. It must be what the perceived market wants. I think this limits the versatility of the amp. Early breakup was something Leo and company strove to overcome if my understanding of Fender history is correct.

For me the real Fender is Leo's legacy. The current owners of the name Fender are in it only for the money. Leo created a market and built it. Fender is trying to hold onto that place. A growing population has helped. The growing perception of Fender quality :?: will not. :D

The modern Fender has helped build the market for DIY amps. My wizzy sense tells me this what not done out of benevolence. My guess is they are aware of this consequence of their dereliction of QC issues. It is also my guess that they cannot do much about it. Shareholders will never be willing settle for less or even the same. More is always required.

The story still unfolds and is being written, so what the future brings is uncertain.
I own Fender products and am glad I do. They are serving me well, so far. It is just frustrating to see quality go down in a venerated product.

I was told a short time ago a buddy saw Strat crafted in China! If that is so they are a dirty $@!&# of a company! I will build parts casters. I am sick, get junk if you do not spend $4,000.00for a guitar?

I have not even had that. Even the one Squier I have (a goldtop Tele Thinline Vintage Modified) had a ridiculously nice neck for the measly $220 that I paid for it (new). Even the tuners on it are pretty good. All I did to that guitar was change the pickups to some that came out of a MIA Fender Tele Standard. But that's not a complaint ... It is a ridiculously great guitar for the money.
