I love Fender guitars, but...

There are quality problems. They may have gotten better than they were, but there are still problems. Many buyers seem willing to overlook that for a low price. I'm not one of them.
Fender does have the Squier brand where they can have less strict quality control. For something marked "Fender", I would expect better. Yes, again, it's better than it was a few years ago, but it's still not good. Neither of my last two Fenders were without quality problems, and in my opinion, neither of them should have received a PASS mark.

Another issue is the lack of replacement parts. Only a few of the most standard guitars and configurations have a decent part selection - for a lot of the guitars Fender sells, you have to hunt down a broken guitar to get parts, because Fender won't sell them. Even for brand new guitars!

So my feelings are mixed. I love Fender guitars, and how they play. But I'm not too thrilled with Fender as a company, and the consumerism. I wish the Fender branded products were higher quality, even if it means a higher price.

A pretty good summation, IMO.

I see 61% of poll respondents are thrilled with Fender. That will make the shareholders happy and non-amenable to upping the Fender game. Fortunately, better, more human, minds can sometimes prevail in corporations. The overall improvements in the HRD's III line gives testament to someone caring about the QC from a buyer's perspective.

Consider all Fender products, guitars, amps, speaker cabinets, parts, accessories, even Fender service. I wouldn't consider the vendors as part of the product, but I realize that figures in to the experience. I suspect that it wouldn't make much difference if we had separate polls for each category of product.

I'll get the ball rolling; Thrilled! :D

Great products, check.
Excellent service, check.
Competitive pricing, check.

No shortage of complainers on this forum. In fact, we have a couple of members who almost exclusively complain about nearly every modern-era Fender amp. The point really is to try and corral all of the opinions on this forum about Fender to get a rough idea of the percentage of happy customers. As I pointed out on another thread, this is one of those small selective polls, just for kicks, I realize that it isn't definitive.

OK, more difficulty with a response more than a couple of paragraphs, I don't get it, but I had to split my response in order to post.

And, when you talk about Fender, you've also got to define it a bit further. Which Fender? Fender Electrical Instrument Co. (1946-1965)?, Fender Musical Instrument Co. - CBS (1965-1988), or the currrent Fender Musical Instrument Co. (1988-present)? If your poll isn't restricted to the current company, again your results won't be valid....

You might have a good point there. Possibly the Vintage gear would score better, however those proponents are much fewer in numbers, and they have a double standard for gear. They don't mind spending a few hundred to make a vintage amp playable (which is a surety when the amp is very old, it has to be serviced), but they scoff at spending $100 to modify a modern amp. BTW, the CBS era ended in '85, not '88.

I'll take modern Fender over vintage Fender any day. Besides my two ordeals with two separate American specials, one in 2011 and one two months ago. My purchases have been fine. Fender quality control really needs to be refined for the neck pocket however. That was my last problem and today I was at a music store and a new Precision bass had big gaps on both sides of the neck pocket. This is a critical part to ensure vibration continuation from the neck and body, and since that bass was a 2011 I could tell that others knew to pass on it as well.

Silly Stuff really !!

Not a fan of current Fender Amps, they don't stand above other brands like they did in the past. The re-issues aren't necessarily very faithful to the originals. You can get Blackface or Silverface amps for less money than many current amps and get a better amp in the bargain.

It must pose an interesting dillema for Fender today - that one of their biggest competitors is Fender of yesteryear.

cheers!

Agree Lightning MN, I would only buy a fender amp that was made in 50's to early 70's nothing new.

If I wasn't satisfied with Fender Basses, I wouldn't have just ordered a Fretless Jazz. The minor issues I've had, were satisfied.

I think the poll was worded about as good as could be done given it has to be a single answer (multiple choice) to a single question (at least that's my understanding). And for those claiming bias because Fender lovers frequent the forum and Fender haters stay away sure haven't been reading the Modern Amp sub-forum with much Fender bashing going on.

My response is directed to the guitar amps, of which I own 5 (4 tube and 1 ss). I don't care for Fender guitars as my tastes lie toward Humbuckers, P-90's, or Filtertrons. I don't dislike Fender Guitars, they are just not my choice.

I voted Mixed Feelings:
1) I love the sound of Fender amps more than any other production amp I've tried.
2) I believe Fender's warranty, warranty period, and their warranty repair network is second to NONE! (Amps)
3) I like the variety of amps Fender offers throughout their lines.
4) Of the 5 Fender amps I own, 3 had to have warranty service. Of those 3, one was very minor (broken FS button), one intermediate (footswitching and squealing reverb), and the third was a major problem (details too complex to get into, but it was year 4 of the 5 yr. warranty when it was finally solved). All three amps were fixed under warranty at no cost to me, and two were fixed quickly with no recurrences.

I own other amps also, but keep returning to Fender due to their sound and warranty. My other two non-Fender tube amps have both needed warranty work as well.

So, you can see it's a mixed bag for me. I'll probably buy another Fender amp within a year in spite of the issues I've dealt with. If not a Fender, it'll be a boutique amp.

My Amer. Standard 2011Tele also has gaps where the neck joins the body. Love the tone of the guitar but the workmanship on my Tele pales in comparison to the workmanship on my Modern Player Jag. The neck and fret finishes are flawless. Makes my American made Tele and LP look like they were assembled while somebody was texting. LP sounds real good too. Good parts, fair assembly or prep.

I said mixed feelings.

I love everything Fender has been doing with their instruments the past 15 - 20 years. Quality is up, for the most part anyway. Pricing is comparatively stable. Colour selection could be better but that's not a deal breaker. Instrument-wise things have never been better in my opinion. What I don't like about Fender is what they've been doing with their amplifiers, making everything continually cheaper and cheaper. Guitar quality goes up with new technology. Amp quality goes down. For the past two years I have been in the previously unfamiliar territory of not having a single Fender amplifier in my amp herd after having spent nearly all my guitar playing life as a die-hard Fender amp nut. Unless you count my Fender Amp-Can which I almost never use and don't actually consider it to be a real amp anyway and also a Fender Tweed Deluxe clone kit still unassembled sitting in my studio. As it stands right now my best Fender amp is a Rivera. Even the Custom Shop amps aren't what they once were. I'm hearing people say the early VibroKings were better built than the newer models.

I voted thrilled, because I think all three of my Fender guitars are excellent instruments and worth what I paid.
Do I think they could do a few things better, definitely:
Make it easier for someone to order a custom build that doesn't take over a year to get and cost more than twice what it should.
Quit riding the coat tails of their vintage amps and build some new models that have features a modern musician needs. I wanted to buy a new Fender amp but I'd have to give up too many features I want and pay more.
