It's been an interesting year to say the least. I found some delamination problems on the neck binding on my FCS Jazz in Nov 2012, less than a year of ownership. At first they denied any warranty work calling it normal wear and tear and returned the bass without any repair work being done, but it was damaged in the return shipping. So I sent it back to the custom shop where they were good enough to repair the shipping damage, but still not the delamination.
Rob Schwarz-Fender read about my problems on this thread; http://forums.fender.com/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=86903, then stepped in to help get the delamination repaired. Really appreciate your help Rob.
I shipped it off in July and I received the bass yesterday. Intially I thought the neck looked nice and it also plays nice, but after closer examination I found a couple of flaws.

Check out the pics below and tell what you think....what would you do? Send it back.....keep it?
Keep in mind this is a custom shop bass that cost me a little over $4,000.00.

Rob if you read this thread I would appreciate your opinion as well.

The flaws I am referring to are the places in the neck binding that kind of look like faded fret markers. There are a total of 3 places located on top of the neck between the 17th and 19th frets. I have tried lightly polshing the area, but these spots are in the finish.

Being a person who uses the side markers more than anything else, I'd have serious issues with that. That could make a person cross eyed in the middle of playing. I'd go nuts trying to play it live if they were visible in the wrong spots like that. It would just be a matter of time before I hit a wrong note.

I've certainly had my share of guitars, and I've never seen anything like that. My Squier Esprit was flawless, and i have a Cort that has stunning craftsmanship, bindings, inlays, etc. I would think any CustomShop should be too. That's my opinion on it anyway. A $4,000 guitar should have not one blemish unless it's some kind of CS relic.

Hiya grho50,
yeh that doesn't look right.
I'm kind of "off campus" for a bit but I'm gonna make our techs aware of this thread and someone should get with you.
Sorry for the trouble!!

All the best,
rob

Thanks Rob. Like I said before, I appreciate your help.
I just sent an email with pictures to Michael Roberts.

@ brotherdave....double nuts!

Jah Soldier....I appreciate your opinion. Pretty much in line with what I was thinking.

Those spots would send my OCD tendencies into overdrive..

That being said, it sure would bother me... Especially considering the price you paid for the bass.

I can understand being particular when spending that much money, you want perfection, nothing wrong with that. I would probably just touch up the areas with a sharpie and forget it. I sort of like things like that, a little unique character.

I can relate to that.....if it was one of my other basses then that's probably what I would do.
Considering the cost of this bass plus when/if I ever decide to sell, how much would this hurt the resale value?
Guess that really depends on who's buying. Some buyers may not mind, some will. Just never know.
I am sure it won't increase the value though.

Yeah, especially where the spots are located they are easily seen. Knowing that they are there my eyes automactically go to those spots.

No need to send in the clowns just yet oxfan.

Thanks again to Rob Schwarz-Fender and Michael Roberts, Fender Custom Shop will do what's right. I received this email today;

"Hello Gary,
I am really sorry to see that. I spoke with Rob and the in house tech that has been working with this as well. What we are going to do is build you another neck but we will not have you send your bass in until the neck is completed and ready for assembly. This way you can play your bass and we will only need it for a week or so for assembly and setup."

I have to admit....you can't beat this kind of customer service. :)

awwww but remember......this will be the second neck produced under warranty for this bass.
The first time I sent the custom shop my bass they denied performing any warranty work. It was only after Rob Schwarz-Fender read about what happened on this forum that they agreed to repair the original problem. The pictures I posted were of the replacement neck I just received.
I'm just relieved that there is no hassel or run around this time.

It certainly seems like it was very unusual the way this whole thing happened. I can't imagine this kind of thing happens all too often. Glad you got it resolved.
