Agree, some of those Ibanez hollow body guitars are great values. I had the AG95 but for whatever reason they put in ceramic humbuckers, swapped those out with Duncan 58s and it was a legitimate player. Not crazy about the finishes, I think they use some kind of poly on it that looked kind of cheap, shame since the detail on the rest of the guitar is outstanding. Have not played one but the AF155 looks particularly good, they even put the right pickups in it, their Super 58 customs which are a good sounding vintage style humbucker.

You can play jazz on almost every guitar. (I'll respectfully exclude all the pointy headed buzz bomb heavy metal axes like BC Rich or Treban or whatever they're called)...

I've seen many a jazzer accomplish a lot with a Telecaster and a dialed back tone knob.

...and remember, SRV cut quite an authentic jazz sound with his Strats (especially "Lenny").

Those Artcore Ibanezes (Ibanii?) are great instruments though...

I know that playing jazz depends on the person who plays, but I was just talking pure about the sound of the guitar. I think that liking the tone of your guitar has influence on your way of playing. If you don't like its sound than you won't like the playing. Don't you think?

Agree with Armadillo, barring guitar abominations (like B.C. Rich or insert metal-head guitar here) you should be able to get good clean Jazz tones from almost any well made guitar, Telecaster's in particular are so well suited to the genre, particularly those that have vintage (or vintage spec) pickups. Those L.I. pickups are something to behold. When I do make the investment in a guitar, the first thing I check (assuming the guitar is playable) is can I get a good clean guitar tone out of it? If you can get that, getting other tones out it is gravy. I always chuckle when I see a expensive, well-made guitar and the player has it run through multiple stompboxes with the gain on 12, why bother spending the money.

Listen to Ed Bickert or some Ted Greene, you'll get the picture. Bill Frissell has some good stuff too. Many jazz players are really bound by tradition, hey Wes played an L-5, Joe Pass played a 175, etc etc. And you have to admit, a well-made hollow body does sound great, and they are works of art (and a joy to play), but just because you don't have a "Jazz" guitar doesn't mean you can't play jazz. What did Keith Richards say, give me 5 minutes alone and I can make em all sound the same, while not 100% true, there is some wisdom in that.

I've been dabbling with some Jazzy stuff lately after my recent Semi-hollowbody purchase. But at the moment, even I'd have to say that my Telecaster has a better sound for it. I think a Tele neck pickup nails it pretty good.

My Semi-hollow just has these Phat Cats in it that I don't think work as well. It makes me reach for the tones. I have to mess with the tone knobs for a while to get a decent Jazz tone. I'm really searching for a better set of pickups for the guitar. But before I do, I'm going to try a magnet swap in the Phat Cats first. It's been rumored to be a good remedy for Phat Cats. But if it doesn't work, I'll continue to research a good set of hums. So far I'm being told Gibson Classic 57's might be what the guitar needs.

Gibson 57s are great, probably the best humbucker Gibson makes, and pretty well suited for Jazz, the Burstbucker 1 is pretty good too, the Duncan 58's aren't bad, but I would give the nod to the Gibson 57s, the Duncan Seth Lover is pretty good too. Kent Armstrong makes a vintage 57 set that is pretty good too.

this is a jazz machine. I looked for a 63-67 Barney Kessel/Barney Kessel Custom, my favorite hollow body electric but didn't find a good photo. I called the Gibson custom shop a few years ago and, yes they will make one for you but it was $2500 to start back then I would imagine it is much more now lol.Image

Well, I played the Hollowbody again today and decided to pull the trigger on some Classic 57's. I couldn't take it anymore. I'm not sure if it's p-90s I don't like in general or Phat Cats. But I can say that I don't like these pickups. I still might try a magnet swap in the Phat Cats just for experimental purposes and try them in another guitar. But I want my Hollowbody to be great sounding period.

I found a set on eBay for $155. It has the Classic + in the bridge which I think I'll like better anyway, and they're Zebra. It's a winning combo all around. Less gold, more black, hotter in the bridge, decent price, I'm down.

That's a great price for a set, almost certainly one of the most versatile sets that Gibson makes.
