Hi

Just wanted to know what you guys like the most for playing jazz. A tele (or maybe a strat) or a hollowbody (full or semi)? :p

grtz

For out-of-the-box- tone, I would opt for a hollow or semi-hollow body guitar. With that said, good guitarists will get the right tone with almost any guitar. That is a level of playing that is less than common so, I like the hollow for jazz with the above proviso applied.

The Toronto jazz great Ed Rickert has used the same old Tele for session work for several decades now.The guitar is completely stock yet he can get such a mellow tone from it you'd think that he was playing a Gibson ES-5 Switchmaster with PAFs.He achieves this mostly by making use of the neck pickup or both at one time and the tone rolled back. On the other hand some of the Epiphone hollow bodies such as the Joe Pass,EmperorII, Broadway,Byrdland,Sheraton,Dot,ES-175,Riveria and even the Casino can get into jazz territory with the chiming P-90s.Of course if you're prepared to get into the Gibson equivalents of a lot of these models you'll be paying a premium for guitars that are just marginally different or better than the Epis according to what I have found with my 6 Epis.

If the Question is:

Can I use my Telecaster to play Jazz ?

The Answer is:

Absolutely !

If, on the other hand, the Question is:

Which guitar should I buy to play Jazz, a Telecaster or a Hollow/Semi Body?

The Answer is simple:

The Hollow/Semi Body !

Why buck convention ?

99.999% of the Jazz players out there use a Hollow/Semi Body guitar and theoretically, none of them have to.

It's not like it's a close contest between Teles and Hollow/Semi Bodies here... the Hollow/Semi Bodies WIN Hands Down !

What is it they know that others don't?

I mean if this is a style you're just beginning to explore, why begin with a massive hill to climb ?

Study which players' styles you like and then look at what they're playing... then decide accordingly.

cheers!

The many types of jazz come to mind - Bebop, Acid Jazz, Swing, Dixieland, Modern Jazz, Lounge, Nu Jazz, Jazz Fusion, etc.

That being said, I like all of the above. :D

I heard that the hollows from ibanez are pretty good for their price, even better than the epis. Is that true?

In my experience, yes, it's true. I have parted with my two Epi hollow-bodies, but I still own two Ibanez and they're as nice to look at as they are to play.

I have an Ibanez Artcore that sounds decent, but feels uncomfortable.

I have not played a new Ibanez that I liked in years except for the AR series. The ones I have played seem to have nice sound and feel.

I have an Ibanez Artcore, a now discontinued one. It was my gateway electric guitar. I bought three more electrics after that and play them all. My Tele Standard is my favorite for all around. George Benson also plays an Ibanez but, I think it is a true hollow body. The humbuckers on these guitars play a good part in the warm full tones of jazz, IMO.

I still think a semi or hollow body would be the right choice. I might advise against even trying a Tele. It may be the wrong guitar for your sound but, you will want it anyway.

My Tele Thinline '72 is definitely not a Jazz guitar. It's way too bright and colorful.
My chambered Tele, on the other hand, is a different story. I certainly play fusion on it, with the strings bumped up a bit. I'm considering whether to file the nut on it so I can use a wound g string.

But it's not what a purist would call a jazz guitar. Then again, what is? Some demand hollow bodies, others want acoustic pickups, some want a longer scale, and some file down the frets to tiny ridges. I think it's about image as much as anything, and that a good player can do well with pretty much any guitar, and change it to his preference later if needed.

I was very tired when I wrote the preceding post because I totally forgot to mention my Ibanez Artcore AFS-75-T,it is an incredible guitar and the previous owner put Seymour Duncan humbuckers in it which gave it a deadly PAF tone but it can sound very clean and mellow or when you overdrive your amp,it can tear your face off.All in all it's a great jazz guitar.Coincidently just a couple of days ago I went in to the Seymour Duncan Facebook page singing the praises of the Ibanez with the Duncans in it and Seymour himself left a message thanking me for my comments,I should be thanking him because my '52 Vintage Hotrod Tele has a Duncan mini-hum in the neck position and it's just incredible. I'm sold on Duncans....and of course Vineham pickups too.

The answer is can you get Jazz tones out of Tele or Strat, the answer is yes and yes. Ted Greene and Mike Stern both played a Tele, that is pretty tough to argue with. I have two Tele's 52 RI with the Fender Custom Shop Nocaster pickups and a Tele with Texas Specials, I can get great Jazz tone out of both, however, the Nocaster pickups have a clear edge and it is almost certainly because of the low impedence of the neck pickup. Through the right amp (I play through a 65 Princeton Reverb RI but I can get great jazz tone out of my practice Champion 30). The Tele is a seriously underrated jazz guitar. My Stratocaster is also easy to get great Jazz tone out of, I have Duncan SSL's in them, another low impedence pickup, with the neck and middle pickup you get some great clean tones, with the right amp settings. I could never understand why more Jazzers never even gave Strats a chance, I am guessing that they are too tradition bound to get away from the hollow body mindset. Throw some D'addario chromes on a tele, hit up the neck pickup roll off the tone and you are on your way.

It's the pilot, not the plane...It's the hands as much as the axe.

You can play jazz on almost every guitar. (I'll respectfully exclude all the pointy headed buzz bomb heavy metal axes like BC Rich or Treban or whatever they're called)...

I've seen many a jazzer accomplish a lot with a Telecaster and a dialed back tone knob.

...and remember, SRV cut quite an authentic jazz sound with his Strats (especially "Lenny").

Those Artcore Ibanezes (Ibanii?) are great instruments though...
