I just got home from seeing the Brian Setzer show at the Celebrity Theater in Phoenix.
Great show. Brian's band was real tight. And the power of the Swing Era was easy to imagine as they delivered, song after song. What was hard to imagine, is why this era had to ever fade. I kept thinking of "Benny Rides Again" and the rehearsal required, and the perfection achieved for this track. Well, BSO was close, or it seemed to be when the rotating stage was facing us. Some arrangements were stabby, others lush. On 2, a tall music stand was placed in front of Brian. Must've been complex, if he couldnt remember them.
Brian's voice was cool and easy. He must take care of his voice. And his playing was perfect. That major 6th chord, the one that requires one to place the pinkie over in front of the ring finger? He totally does it on the fly. For A it would be 5x465x. Impressive, to me. I struggle with it still.
The seats were removed from the area in front of the stage. People were dancing in front of the band. At first, just one couple, but soon it looked like a religious snake-handling revival, with swing music. The energy was high throughout.
The opener was an Australian rockabilly band called "Firebird" or, "The Firebirds",not sure. Their songs seemed to run into each other. The guitarist was playing a 61?? something graphite colored Gretsch for most of the set, but on the last 2 numbers, switched to a Tele with just a bridge pickup. The change in the quality of tone was notable. It defined and lifted the last songs like a WonderBra.
I certainly felt it. The Tele looked new and the pickguard seemed to have never had a cutout for a neck pickup. Gretchs' always sound scratchy to me.
Anywayz, if you get the chance, go.

Yep - great show. By the way, he didn't need that chart, it was a prop as in the show we saw earlier this month when he strolled the stage while doing the Nutcracker Suite and not even glancing at the chart.
