I am looking to purchase some sort of guitar stand, one that will not ruin the finish of my American Standard Strat nor fall over at unsuspected times. I do own two guitars is it better to have a double or two singles. I do put my guitars away in the cases for safe keeping every night when I am done playing. Of course I do want to spend as little as possible, but I do not want a POS. Advice is welcomed

As far as I know getting the right stand depends on what kind of finish your guitar has. Anyway, I've never put much thought into it so can't really say what would be the best one, but telling what kind of guitar finish you have might help others to help you out ;)

As far as stands go - the one for 2 guitars is pretty neat. We've got it in the studio where we rehearse. I myself use the stands that are mounted on the wall as the guitar will be kept in it's weight center that way and will be affected by gravity equally on all parts of it. You can opt for guitar stands where you put your guitar on the floor, but the gravity won't affect everything in the same manner and could, over time, curve the neck.
So I'd advise opting for a stand that the guitar doesn't 'sit on' but rather hangs off it - if you know what I mean. They are reliable and the guitar will rest in the best possible position to defy gravity pull deteriorating it's build.

Neimenljivi thanks for your input

From what I understand American Standards all have Polyurethane finishes. I imagine it is hard as nails and not much should ruin it but just asking if any one knows for sure.

I will continue to put my guitars back into there cases every night as I put them to bed. So they will not be long term on a stand but the hanging advice is a thought as I would not want to hurt the neck in anyway
Thanks

No problem mud :)
As for the 'hard as Chuck Norris' - that may be the case against mechanical damage, but chemicals could damage it. I think Nitro finish is more prone to damage from chemicals as well. What I think does the trick on pretty much every stand (no matter what's the finish on the guitar) is to put a 100% cotton cloth on all the surfaces where the guitar will be touching the stand. That way you should avoid any stains from stands.
I'd get the same stand as the one BMW-KTM linked you to, only I'd get it for 2 guitars (one on one side, the other one hangs from the other side). Alternatively you can also buy the ones that are mounted on the wall (I think the Hercules ones cost around 10€ a piece) - they are equally safe. Unless the stand breaks or something (which it won't unless you abuse it ; for wall-mounted stands I recommend checking them every now and then to make sure they're still well mounted) your guitar will be much less likely to fall off them than the 'normal' stands.

I mainly leave them on stands at home (mainly for convenience and as I said - the hang-off stands are great but also to see the smile on my 18 months old nephew when he sees them and wants to pluck the strings), don't usually put them back in cases, unless I know I won't have time to play and don't even take them out of cases once I come from band practice. Close to 3 years since I've had my Gibson LP and a year and a half since I've had the Strat with Nitro finish - no stains yet :)

Neimenljivi; Thanks for the Cotton Cloth advise sounds good. As far as hanging on the wall I do like the idea, but not sure if my wife would be happy with the new bedroom wall hangings  and to many kids come though the rec room for me to trust that they would not be pulled down and used without my knowledge (18 and 22 year old with friend ) could be a disaster

BMW-KTM; Thanks for the recommendation I will look into these Hercules stands they do seem sturdy

Hahah imho it's the best addition :D Heck my GF admitted to me that if she hadn't seen a pic of me with a Gibson LP she probably would have never even tried talking to me as that was how she got the vibe that I might be interesting  All things considering, it's quite a funny story of how we met, considering we live literally 200m from each-other, but we've been together for 2 and a half years now so I guess it's working :P I would be very surprised if she told me to put the guitars somewhere else - well, other guitars could go elsewhere, just not the LP one  We are not living together yet though, I am (compared to you based on your post) still a kid - 20 years old - and she's a bit younger than me :P

Anyway I can understand you wanting to lock up your guitars somewhere safe in that case. I wouldn't want my guitars touched unless I was around or asked for a permission either, especially by someone that I wouldn't know.

Since I discovered them I have replaced all my stands with them. In fact they also sell the heads separately and I may fabricate an inline multi stand using them.

That's what I use, heads mounted on the wall. Works great.

I fabricated a nice little guitar stand for my bass rig last summer. I took a piece of 14 gauge plate and bent it in the brake so it perfectly fits the cabinet of my Red Head. Then I mounted a Herc head on each side. Now I have a secure bass hanger that holds both my basses and it won't fall over. Plus it reduces my on stage footprint. Pics are poor due to cheap phone cam and port lighting.

Nice mate, an easy way to make sure you don't forget such things for a gig and highly practical :) Except for transportation if you have a wide amp and narrow trunk, but I reckon that's not the case otherwise you wouldn't have done it :)

I can't get myself to use stands where the guitar hangs from the neck. My violin teacher really hammered it in that one should neveR eveR hang an instRument by its neck.
So I can't get myself to do it, now, several generations later.

Not to sound snobby, but can anyone recommend stands that resemble furniture more than pieces of metal? My wife actually likes to look at my guitar, but complains when I move it to the living room because the stand looks cheap to her. In her defense, she makes a good point in that I'm displaying a very expensive instrument on a cheap $50 stand. Just curious if there are more "esthetic" options out there?

Most modern stands are made using synthetic pads that are not supposed to be a threat to the finish Avoid rubber pads.

Hi LouisvilleNoob, funny that you should ask because a fellow member here is actually Atlas Amp Stands, the coolest guitar stands ever. Check his website out and let us know if you dig.
