We are going to record a party that we are playing this weekend. We are going to try and mic the room and take it off the mixing board. We also run our vocals through the mixer into the PA.

I have 2 options for recording.

1. Lightsnake out of the headphones output, direct into the laptop, record using Cool Edit Pro.

2. RCA out of the board into a Toneport UX2, into computer, into Cool Edit Pro.

I guess its called Pod Studio now.

I've used the snakelight to take recordings off of an old digital 8 track, that had no usb output, and it seemed to work fine. This would be the easiest.
If all else fails, I suppose we could go for option 3 and rent a hand held recorder, like one of those Zoom ones.

Any thoughts on the process?

if I have to choose between 3.5mm and RCA, I usually go with RCA.

What does your mixing board have for I/Os?

I only know of the tape input/output (rca) and the headphones out. This board belongs to the other guitar player, so I have barely looked at it. We just want something that sounds good enough to use to shop around for gigs.

In that case, I'd try doing it 2 ways.

1 - option 1 that you mentioned.

2 - if someone has a standalone (the Boss BR recorders
have a very decent built in mic'ing system) also
try and capture that way...or a handheld.

Then you can compare the two and use which sounds best.

Good luck!

This is just my opinion and I am shure (spelling intended) that everyone has one
I have found that board recording can be a little interesting as the engineer makes changes to the board maybe needs to boost the effects, or make the keys louder, or the guitar is screaming and need to be taken out of the mix, or, not enough mics for the drums and now the drums sound like they were recorded in the room next door,or, or, and so on I have found that 2 mic to a recorder or a stand alone recorder like a zoom will make a better live recording because it will pick up what the room hears. This is just my experience as I have recorded a lot of shows from a FOH desk ( front of house console) direct to a recorder with a lot of success and a lot of failure. One of my failures was an Alvin Lee Show (from Ten years after) and his guitar was so loud he had to be taken out of the mix and every solo, he sounded like he was down stair in the bathrooms playing. If you are going to be more concerned about the recording and not how it sounds live then board to recorder works fine, just my opinion

So the recording didn't happen. Once the cables were plugged in to both the board and the laptop, there was digital noise that came through our PA, and all it recorded was noise. I think we'll just rent one of those Zoom handheld recorders next time.

How did you split the L and R to go into the computer?

I didn't split it. I first tried the Lightsmake (usb guitar cable) out of the headphones and it gave digital noise, so I tried it out of a mono output and the same noise occurred. We then tried RCA outs into a Y connector into the mic input of the laptop. We got the same digital noise. I didn't have an opportunity to load the software for teh toneport on the laptop, so I couldn't try that route, but the toneprt does accept L and R 1/4" cables. I had a friend make me 2 RCA to 1/4", but I have not tried it yet. i am currently looking at the Zoom H1. Does anyone have any experience with that recorder?

Nick had or has that unit (nikininja) - I have a
small Boss BR unit that does a good job too.
