So I got a brand new Abbey Road vinyl reissue in September, and on two songs, it skips. One is towards the end of "Something" and the other is right in the begininning of "Here Comes the Sun". They are not the kind of skips that repeat, it just goes to another point in the song. For example, in Here Comes the Sun it has the instrumental intro then goes to "…sun and I said it's alright" etc. It happens in the same two spots each time. What could be wrong? Could there be just lodged in these two spots? What are some easy ways of cleaning the areas without damaging the record? PLEASE HELP :(

Sorry to hear of your dilemma. There is a reason that CD's became popular. They tolerate our simian heritage a little better.

Unfortunately, I do not have a solution for you. Good luck. :D

Could be the album itself (remastered) Amazon has stopped selling Abbey Road because of problems.
This is what they are saying about it.

Sadly some vinyl now days is called remastered is from digitized junk used for cd's not original analog recordings. In essence they are putting over digitally compressed sound back on vinyl. You like to have mastered from original recordings.

"Back in the day" we'd just stack a couple of nickels on the tone arm.

That's no cure of course. You might examine the platter with an optovisor to try and spot the offending groove obstructions. If you see anything, try brushing it away with a nylon-bristled toothbrush or similar instrument.

The record could be defective or the turntable might need some fine tuning (antiskating, tracking force, or cartridge mounting position).

Ah, Memories! When I think of all the stuff they came up with to make record play correctly! Let’s see, there was the ZeroStat gun, Dishwasher System, super lightweight tone arms, strobe speed adjustment, direct drive with 6 pound platters, and I still jumped on CD’s Faster than the blink of an eye. Anybody remember anything else?

I remember scrubbing the groves of the record lightly with a soft bristle toothbrush and rubbing alcohol to get the dust out of the groves. Brushing in the direction of the groves, of course.

We all jumped on the digital CD's because "they" told us they were better.

Have you tried running the albums through a good cleaning machine like the VPI 16.5? Even new records will ship containing contaminants from factory. A good cleaning or even a good rinsing with a qulity cleaning machine should take care of the issue ... unless it is a pressing problem. In that case, ask Amazon to take it back.

For the musicians here prefering CD's ... have you done a comparison between the two medias? There is a reason vinyl is coming back strongly and CD's are a dying beast, it is called Sound Quality. In other words, it is like comparing a brand new Squire made in Indonesia to 1962 Strat, would that not be almost sacrilege? ... CD's are convinient, not truly a good source for quality music reproduction!! Shoot, a good cassette sounds better than a CD!!!

I was only addressing the issue of durability. Sound quality was not even hinted at by me. I would hope to not be so foolish. The sterility of modern media has a coldness to it that is not a desirable thing.

I was being light-hearted about the issue.

Still about the best and readily available again. I use mine whenever I throw an LP on the turntable.

I can't even remember when the last time I played a record. Arjay I do remember the nickel trick. That was along time ago.

I adjusted the counterweight...

For cleaning really dirty records, nothing worked better than silly putty - it would not leave any residue, unlike many of the professional cleaning products.
