I'm picking up one of those swirl teles soon, and I have A LOT planned for that guitar. First, and probably cheapest, on the list, is the pickups. I've decided I want lipsticks on this thing. I want the jangly, pretty cleans and muddy, noisy-as-hell, microphonic sound with fuzz. I'm not looking for some "updated new noiseless sterile clean!" sounding pickups. The matter of size will be addressed later, right now all that matters is sound.

So, should I go with a Danelectro set, Seymour Duncan, or something else?

NOTE: For the bridge, I'm considering doubling up on them, like a Dano mod 6.

Could try Kent Armstrong Lipstick pickups I have bought them from WD before.

I know I said I'd worry about fit later, but...

Apparently, it's very hard to get even string spacing or w/e with these, because they are designed for Danelectro guitars... COuld this be solved by simply angling the pickup?

G'day, these ProTubes have the sound you describe, and they fit straight into a Strat (not sure about a Tele) Also available in black and chrome.

Aaaaand apparently there are multiple versions from Dano. The low output originals, and the higher output reissues. Which are the ones known for the glassy, jangly tones? Even if I don't go Dano, this is important so I know which replicas/knockoffs to buy...

Regarding the Danelectro pickups:
The low output originals are going to have a cleaner, glassier sound (which seems like what you're looking for)... The newer, "high output" won't be as high gain as the description indicates; I would compare them to a very clean and bright Strat or Tele pickup.

I've heard good things about the WD and ProTube pickups mentioned above (supposedly very "original Dano" sounding) and they're "Fender Spaced", so that may be the way to go.

The Seymour Duncans? I don't know, but they have a killer customer support department and they may be able to let you know everything you need to know.

Be sure to let us know and send us some pics and sound samples!

Angling them might help, but the string spacing will never be spot-on, especially with that humbucker you were mentioning...it would look very cool that way, though! 8)

I can say this about lipsticks (having owned a Danelectro DC3 Pro years ago)--the string spacing and perfection of "poles lining up with the strings" isn't as important as you might think, especially if you're not coupling them with pickups of a different kind on the same guitar. By the nature of their construction (namely, the lipstick case around the bobbin), these pickups aren't as "focused" as the usual guitar pickup...which adds to the lo-fi appeal which you seem to aiming for.

Any difference in sound/volume would have to be compensated for with either a boost pedal or the twist of the volume knob on your amp (if you're switching guitars between songs).

Lipstick pickups are made by winding around a bar magnet.

A-ha! That's why there was no noticeable problems with "pole pieces" lining up with the various angles on the different Danelectro guitars...
