So I'm thinking about entering this contest http://nimbusrecording.com/mix-contest/
I've never really tried to mix a song that already exists, and I'm not really sure where to start, but I figure it's worth a shot and I have nothing to lose.
Does anyone have any pointers on how to create a professional sounding mix?
Are some DAWs better for this than others?

Winning this contest would get me into my dream school, but even more than that it would it would get Randy Lennox, Bob Ezrin, and Garth Richardson to listen to my work! For those who don't know, these guys can get you a career in the Canadian music industry.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

To me, it looks like a typical "fake audition", where the main point is to sell expensive classes and training, and the "winner" gets parts of it sponsored. If so, expect not to win, but plenty of pressure to sign up for classes. And even if you win, you'll need more money to be able to afford to accept the prize.

Yeah, Bob Ezrin is good. But that doesn't imply that he's a good teacher, or even that he'll teach you.

Thanks for the reply arth1!
From what I've heard about Nimbus (talked to some people in the industry, as well as former students) they are a top notch school. The $25,000 would pay for my entire time at the school. Also, there is no pressure to sign up for any classes unless you win. You don't need to sign up for anything before hand.
Bob Ezrin is not a teacher at the school, he is simply one of the founders (and a judge for the contest). Former students that I've talked to have said that the teaching staff is great though.
I apologize if that's not a proper reply to your comments, I wasn't 100% sure what you were saying.

Bob Ezrin as in THE Bob Ezrin who produced Pink Floyd? Well I seriously doubt he'd have to get involved into something fake, he's got more than enough money. Good luck with the contest mate :)

You likely have to pay taxes on anything exceeding a small scholarship exemption.
And have to pay for housing, living expenses, and various other things (equipment, trips, research). So make sure you can afford to win first, is all I'm saying.
