Could you live with just having one tone knob? I've never had a guitar with just one tone knob. I recently played one with the thought of buying it, but I didn't find that I was happy with how the bridge sounded after adjusting the neck or vice versa. I see lots of guitar models offered with just one tone knob so I assume a whole lot of players get by just fine with one. I don't think I can. I'm getting too obsessive with getting tone just to my liking.

I'd be ok with a guitar with no tone knob. The choice seems to be: clear or muddy. I like clear. On a Strat, anywayz. Maybe guitar makers could replace tone knobs with some effect, something like od or comp. just sayin.

My Fender FSR Straight Six Stratocaster has no tone knob, only one pickup a Atomic Humbucker. Lot of great sound through pedals.

Sounds like maybe you need a capacitor on your tone control.
0.022uf should prolly do it.
If you want more info just ask.
Lotsa good wiring gurus here.

I like to have separate tone controls for each pickup, as I use them, and sometimes I want the tone different on each pickup--but I can work with one, as on my mustang.
So it's not a deal killer, but it's a nice option to have.

This, with the force of a billion exploding suns.

And you can take that S1 switch off as well.

I like the S1 switch. Mind, there are two different types, and three different ways it works, so they should perhaps have given it different names. To qualify, the functionality I do like is getting single coil sound out of a neck humbucker when needed.

Otherwise, I'm not a big fan of tone controls. I can't think of a single time when I wanted one pickup to be brighter than the other, with both of them active at the same time. And that would be the only reason for separate controls.
On guitars with separate tone controls, they're only a cause of unexpected changes when switching between pickups, so I leave them at full, and adjust the tone on a pedal or amp.

I know Leo put those two tone controls onto the Stratocaster, but I have no idea why...can't remember the last time I used one. I must admit one thing though, they do balance out the look of the guitar.

I believe that he ended up with 2 because 3 wouldn't fit in the space.
And if he just went with 1, there'd be too much open space.

Here's an example of why I think I need two tones. I'm playing a song where I want a bit of a woman tone on the neck pup. Tone rolled pretty far down. Then I want to switch to the bridge for a solo but I want more treble and clarity than the setting I have for rhythm. Hitting the selector switch and rolling the tone up is an option, but it's a lot easier if I have a second tone control preset. I'm kind of obsessive about efficiency I guess. And lazy too.
Anyway, I know there's no right answer. I pretty much decided not to buy that model guitar, but I'm also thinking of going back and giving it another go.

I'll work with whatever the guitar has on it--one, two, three, whatever...

On my Telecaster (one tone knob/control), I installed a Fender No-Load Tone pot, so I get the best of both worlds as far as having a functional tone control and then (when fully engaged) no tone circuit at all (straight from pickup into amp). It's a cool variation.

I also put a four-way pickup selector, so I have Neck, Bridge, Neck + Bridge (in series) and Neck + Bridge (in parallel), although not necessarily in that order...so my Telecaster has more tonal variations (electronically) than the average Tele...

I have thought about getting one of those Tele plates that has two tone controls (one for each pup) and one volume, as well as the pup selector switch, but overall I'm so happy wih my Telecaster's sound, I think I'll just leave it be.

This is what I thought--but I'll work with around it when I'm playing my Mustang.

On my one tone guitars, like my Tele and Jaguar, I never miss a second tone control. On my two guitars with humbuckers, Ibanez and Gibby LP, I need them to get my tone right. I seem fortunate to have guitars that seemed to be designed just right for my tastes.

I really like not having any tone controls on my guitars, like my Sonic Youth Jazzmaster. I never use any guitar tone control and feel they just are an opportunity to be bumped out of setting. The volume control I would also hypothetically like to remove, but unfortunately there is the rare occasion to use it. On my Strat I am often bumping the tones and volume out of setting and it is annoying.

I use a 2 channel amp and adjust those tone controls for tone/level variation from rhythm to lead. Good enough for me. :D
